Meet Andy Brake, the logistical mastermind behind Fargro's operations. In his role as Head of Operations, Andy ensures the seamless functioning of every aspect of our operation, enabling us to consistently deliver excellent service to our customers.   With a deep passion for horticulture, Andy cultivates strong relationships with our customers, suppliers and distributors, ensuring that we fulfil our commitments every time. Managing inventory, overseeing fulfilment processes, and coordinating deliveries is a monumental task that Andy takes in his stride.   When asked about his role, Andy shared, “In the world of logistics, adaptability is key; things evolve and change at a pace. Over the past two days, I had the wonderful opportunity to visit Red Classic -- the wholly owned logistics subsidiary of Coca-Cola Consolidated. During my time there, I shadowed Chris Foshee -- the Brand and Digital Marketing Manager to learn more about the operations of the trucking industry. Throughout my time there, I sat in on four meetings: external commercial strategy, tactical vs strategy to improving KPIs, engaging in ways Red Classic will implement internal Teammate engagement for the next four months, and planning for the 20th annual Carolinas Food Industry Council (CFIC) convention with Matt Henson -- the annual celebration of the grocery industry across the Carolinas. A premier highlight of the visit was learning about Red Classic's partnership with Sonoco. Though concrete, the two companies recently created a partnership focused on sustainability at their Hartsville, SC yard. The primary issue I learned about was while they have space for 30-35 on-site trailers, at-times that number doubles or triples -- leading to lower percentages or values of KPIs such as excessive use of carbon emissions, higher idling / unloading / and loading times, all calculating to a lower on-time delivery rate than the end goal of 99%. The final project I had was meeting with Kaci Ramlow and Britta Miano to discuss solutions to improve driver efficiency; of which included, but not limited to, improving visibility signage for drivers and better communication between the drivers and dispatch. **"Slow and Steady Progress: Reflections on the Transportation Space"** On July 15, 2021, the State of Illinois issued third-party transporter licenses, and I immediately paid for mine, excited to enter the market. What I didn’t realize at the time was that the 21 cultivators would be allowed to handle their own transportation without a sunset date, leaving little opportunity for third-party transporters like us. Despite that, I didn’t sit still. Myself and Berwyn rallied transporters, hosted workshops, partnered with Cresco’s Wrigleyville facility, and advocated tirelessly to bring awareness to the struggles transporters faced. We introduced tools, companies, software, and resources to help transporters operate their businesses. Today, I no longer advocate for transporters—not because I don’t care but because the landscape became too fractured. Groups started undercutting one another, taking credit for work we had done, and engaging in cutthroat competition. To the hard-working transporters still fighting to make this work, I see you, and I respect you. For those who feel let down by my stepping away, I hope you know that every tool, connection, and strategy we provided was meant to help you succeed. Remember: slow and steady is still progress.
