One element you might see in a Relumination proposal is photometrics. But what are they, and why are they so useful? Photometrics are graphic representations of the light levels present in a space. They are measured in footcandles (fc), AKA the amount of light that saturates one square foot. When presenting prospective projects, we typically use these to showcase the differences between current and future light levels. Having a visual guide to show how much light you have versus how much you could have is helpful for site managers and owners to see how significantly an LED lighting upgrade can change their space. For those of you interested, my latest column for TV Tech Magazine is now available online. It's subject is the venerable workhorse lighting fixture of stage and screen, the Fresnel. This particular fixture traces its invention to lighthouses, where it provided the critical reference points that helped mariners navigate dangerous waters near the coast. Those of you who work with lighting know how the beams from traditional Fresnels have a quality that lets you mold the light. It's like working with a malleable stream of light that you can mold into just the light you need. That's why it was so special. With the transition from incandescent to LED light sources, it turns out that this traditional type of light still shares the same name, but is no longer quite the same.
