I've been running into a bunch of students working at their summer jobs—grocery stores, neighborhood pools, etc. They often seem happier, more independent, more confident than they appear at school. I see them taking directions from managers and getting things done. There's no grumbling, no "late work," and no asking, "Can I just do this at home later?" And they're not on their phones! They're working hard—not simply socializing or goofing around—although, as the article mentions, these jobs can also be a lot of fun. How can schools learn from this? How can schools create environments that mimic the structure, focus, and momentum of a healthy and productive workplace so that students feel driven to achieve an appropriate reward?

👎 See ya later Summer! 👍 Welcome back Fall! It's not exactly a "hipster take" for Fall to be my favorite season (and my season-long sunburn would agree), but now more than ever here's why: 1.) 📈 Hiring Spikes: Big time, at all levels spanning small sophisticated boutiques with a handful of attys, major regional players at the "middle market" scale with offices all across the area, and AmLaw outfits finally through with the rush of Summer Assoc programs, Summer Assoc evals, and redirecting their attention towards filling pressing and imminent needs 2.) 🚨 Increased Hiring Urgency: Everyone (should) be back from their 14-week European vacations, and as such, hiring is on the forefront. In contrast to Jun / Aug, we tend to see the speed of job opening, candidate submission feedback, interview scheduling, subsequent round progression or rejection, and, ultimately, offer and placement, all ramp up to an F1-caliber velocity once the leaves start to turn 3.) 💰 Deep Applicant Pools: With hiring picking up in the Fall, so does the volume of the candidates applying to open roles. As such, salaries, sign-on's, and other bonuses grow more competitive to attract top talent before they're snatched up by competitors (and now to be superficial) 4.) 🧥 The absolute best wardrobe options 5.) 🍂 Crisp, cool, comfortable weather 6.) 🔵 ⚪ College Football 7.) 💚 🦅 NFL Football (go birds) 8.) 🧙♂️ Fantasy Football (wizard marginally related) #LHH #LHHRecruitmentSolutions #ReadyForNext #LegalCareers #LegalHiring #LegalJobs #AttorneyCareers #AttorneyJobs #AttorneyHiring #LawyerCareers #LawyerJobs #LawyerCareers #LawFirmJobs #LawFirmCareers #LawFirmHiring #LateralHiring #AmLawHiring

Summer is traditionally a part of the year that resonates with different recreational activities. Yet, many tech teams’ members, especially team leads, keep working on their duties regardless of the season. That’s why we created a short list of things and tasks for tech leads that suit the summer season the most. Please take a look: Sourcing and hiring new specialists. According to Djinni.co, summer is one of the most popular times for job searching. Only the second half of December and January are traditionally more prosperous with new job applicants in the Ukrainian IT sector. So, as a tech lead, you can fruitfully spend the summer searching for new team members and sourcing candidates. Teambuilding processes. Summertime is a great time for beach parties, picnics, holidays, and other team-building activities. As a tech team lead, you should definitely try to use these three months to create a better, more friendly atmosphere and build trust inside the collective. Learning. It’s not a big surprise that lots of employees and clients prefer to take vacancies during the summertime. So, the workload remains pretty low, and lots of free time appears in tech leads’ schedules. It’s a great time to learn something new, including expanding management skills, improving soft skills, and deepening hard skills. #techlead #teamlead #summer #QulifiedConsulting

“I hope suffering happens to you.” This was a quote from from Jensen Huang’s speech at his Alma Mater Stanford university. In the context of the article I read, he meant :“Greatness is not intelligence. Greatness comes from character. And character isn’t formed out of smart people. It’s formed out of people who have suffered.” Our generation and those after us grew up in a time of increasing wealth and progress. Hardship is a foreign and easily avoidable because options are plentiful in Singapore. Quitting is easy. Solving problems is hard. I have a personal timeline when I am in a new position. Year 1 is to get a lay of the land. Figure out who’s who, how things get done, who are the decision makers and who are the trouble makers etc. Figure out a plan to align what I want to do, what I have to do and how I’m gonna do it. Test the waters, learn to navigate. Year 2 is to activate the plan and pivot when necessary. Year 3 is to take stock and review if there is any progress and if it is worth staying. Year 4, plan for career progression (lateral or vertical) or exit. The stages could be shortened with experience but anything less than a year, tells me the candidate did not give himself or herself a good shot at applying themselves.
Maybe I’m really old-fashioned but I can’t see how #jobhopping can be seen as positive… As an employer, my approach is simple- a job is a match between the organization and the prospective staff. 1️⃣ It’s a two-way street: Organizations provide pay, learning opportunities, career progression and a healthy work environment; Staff contribute in turn their time, energy, intellect and commitment. 2️⃣ Practically, it does take time to learn and also time before staff are contributing back effectively. Hence I remember back in clinical practice the reluctance to take trainees/ residents for anything less than 6-month stints- 3 months to learn, 3 months to use what has been learnt to contribute back. In the non-clinical world, my experience has been at least 1-2 years for this ‘social compact’ to be realized on both sides. 🚩 Anyway, I would be cautious in #hiring anyone who has been in multiple jobs for only brief periods… A red flag for me.
