Ever skipped an opportunity to move because you couldn’t get to the gym or a workout class? Plenty of people do. On the bright side, I love proving that the world is a gym. Equipment is at our fingertips. I found out the fun way while training for American Ninja Warrior during COVID, and had the joy of patiently taking turns on the monkey bars with 7 year olds. There are awesome ways you can tap into your world gym every day. Here are a few: Elliptical => Stairs—increase intensity by going up faster Treadmill => Run outside or turn your errands into a brisk walk Free Weights => Carry your groceries, play multiple rounds of “pick me up” with your kids Squat Machine => Squat to your chair or a park bench Tricep Extension Machine => Dips on a sturdy surface (And naturally I can’t pass scaffolding without turning it into a pull- up bar.) How can we prepare for upcoming youth sports seasons? When training young athletes for a variety of sports, we must keep our creativity in mind while designing drills… One simple twist on freeze tag is to add a balance component… Once the athlete is tagged, they must balance on one leg until freed… This drill will incorporate balance and stabilization into a great game that already has many benefits.
