In the Talent Acquisition/Recruiting profession, we call this a Purple Squirrel. Few (if any) candidates will match these requirements. Few (if any) candidates will possess the mastery of experience across the broad skill set as stated. What’s more, some of the best people may never apply. The result: a job that stays open for months. Hiring for attitude and passion, along with a successful work history, is a much better approach than checking boxes to match skills. The right hire, over time, brings so much more value to a company. By building a culture focused on learning, you get the best talent that will support a growth mindset. I could literally write a book on this topic. If you would like to discuss this approach, please contact me here on LinkedIn. #hiring #learning #learningculture #purplesquirrel
This is unacceptable. A friend recently posted a Senior Graphic Designer role, and I was astonished by the extensive requirements. In my time, designers specialized, not tried to master everything. Companies should stop expecting all-in-one employees; greatness requires a collaborative team effort. Expecting one person to excel at everything is unrealistic and diminishes potential greatness. Creative Directors and hiring managers, reconsider these expectations for a more realistic and effective approach. ……especially for a Sr Graphic Designer. #hiring #jobseekers #hiringmanagers #designer

Thank you for this take, Rich. In my opinion, this goes for all fields. For me it's been difficult to find postings where I'm the right applicant for the job because of certain requirements. That being said, it doesn't hurt to apply and give what you already have instilled within you. What do you have to lose? NOTHING. If you believe you are qualified and meet most, if not all, of the requirements listed, why not give it a go? I ask you all this: Don't stop applying. Don't stop posting. Don't stop networking. Don't. Stop. Period. I believe in you. Don't give up. You got this. We got this. Thank you for reading my post. #opentowork #editor #editing #proofreader #proofreading #publishing #jobseeker #seekingwork #seekingemployment

Digital Media Strategist | Specialist in Paid Social & Integrated Marketing Strategies | Experience in B2C and B2B markets
In today's job market, job descriptions are becoming increasingly exhaustive wish lists, but companies need to remain realistic in the recruitment process. 1) It's understandable that organizations seek top-tier talent, but the laundry list of qualifications and skills required for some roles can be overwhelming. This phenomenon is not exclusive to one field; it's a systemic issue that affects professionals across the board. 2) Are we inadvertently deterring exceptional candidates by setting unrealistic expectations? The emphasis on a lengthy list of prerequisites might exclude competent individuals who bring unique perspectives and skills to the table. 3) As we navigate the evolving job market, I encourage hiring teams to reassess their approach. Let's prioritize essential skills and qualifications, acknowledging that a candidate's potential often extends beyond a checklist. Striking a balance between expectations and reality will not only streamline the recruitment process but also foster diversity and innovation within our teams. 4) It's important to note that as job expectations increase, compensation often does not keep pace. It is time to recalibrate and ensure fair compensation for skills, which will foster a sustainable job market.

Exactly!!! I should technically be at a Senior Graphic designer role. But in the four years I was out of a job, I couldnt get one because of requirements like this. ESPECIALLY in regards to UX design and Web Design. They are vastly different than graphic design. They take a skill that I do not have. It’s not my specialty. I excel at Brand identity, digital documents, visual graphics. And accessibility for those with special needs. Not a study on human behavior and how they are going to click things in a web page or app design. These requirements need to change!!

What an absolute joke. Alternatively, this is a guide on overworking your staff with minimum pay without actually saying you want to overwork your staff with minimum pay.

Art Director, Sr. Brand Designer, Art Licensing & Children's Book Illustrator, Graphic Designer, and Fine Artist with 15+ years experience. Available for full-time, part-time, contract and remote/hybrid roles.
So glad to hear this seasoned Art Director write about this. I was just speaking about this the other day myself. After several years of being self-employed as an Art Director and Sr Brand Designer (and subcontracting specialists for various tasks and newer technologies I couldn't do myself), I'm casually looking into working for an agency again. It's been shocking to see so many job advertisements that expect expert experience in many different specialist areas. Graphic Designers are now expected to be 2d designers, 3d designers, UX /UI designers, illustrators, web develop3"ers, web designers, animators, marketing strategists, photographers, photo editors, videographers, video editors, copywriters...the list goes on. It's even more shocking when you see low-ball salaries attached to these roles. As brand strategists/designers we often speak to our clients about niching down (aka it's better to be an expert at one thing, than mediocre at many things), yet how many agencies are trying to hire these multi-specialist generalists, who, let's face it, are probably not multi-specialists and only try to look like that on paper?
