Today, many of us are in awe of her struggles. She has etched her name in history by becoming the first Indian woman wrestler to reach the final of the Olympic Games. It's certain that silver will be coming home. However, none of us stood by her (not even shared it in our Instagram story, coz that's the kind of support we show these days) when she fearlessly protested on the streets against the sexual harassment of women wrestlers by the then Wrestling Federation of India chief, Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh. It's disheartening, but it's a stark reminder that everyone tends to bow to the rising sun! Image credits: Insidesport

This is path-breaking!

We have continuously heard about #tech companies conducting several rounds of #layoffs, particularly from 2022, but not from any #manufacturing industry. Well, here it is. Tata Steel #UK is supposedly laying off around 2,800 employees at its Steel plant in Port Talbot, South Wales. Why are they doing so, you must be wondering? Well, Tata Steel UK is in a tough spot, making losses of 1 million pounds per day! Whopping! But how did it reach this stage? Steel-making operations have become unsustainable for several reasons, and Tata Steel's Port Talbot plant in the UK is also the largest carbon emitter in the UK. Bihar and Andhra Pradesh may soon receive the Special Category Status (SCS)! However, it’s also possible that they might not get it this time, either! Since it was bifurcated and Jharkhand formed in 2000, Bihar has been requesting Special Category Status (SCS). Andhra Pradesh has been asking for SCS since it split from Telangana in 2014. Fortunately or unfortunately, they haven’t received it yet. But the chances are ripe that after Bihar’s Janata Dal (United) and Andhra Pradesh’s Telugu Desam Party helped form the coalition government after the 2024 elections, its leaders might just ask for it. You must be wondering what’s the buzz about Special Category Status and why these states are keen on getting it. Well, Special Category States receive a myriad of benefits. First, if a state gets the 'Special Category Status,' the central government has to provide 90% of the funds to implement the centrally sponsored scheme, compared to 60 or 75% in the non-SCS states. The state backs the remaining funds. If not spent, the allotted money does not lapse and is carried forward to the next year. An SCS state also gets significant concessions in taxes and duties, including customs, income, and corporate taxes. Further, infrastructure projects receiving funding from multilateral and bilateral international agencies like the World Bank, Asian Development Bank, and others are transferred to SCS states under more lenient terms. For example, multilateral loans are transferred to SCS states as 90% grants and 10% loans, whereas non-special category states receive them as 100% loans. In today's #Finshots, we explain how Russia has managed to overtake Germany and Japan to become the fourth-largest economy in the world despite being at war with Ukraine. Countries at war see a rapid depletion of their natural resources, and their economies shatter due to a massive uptick in war expenses. And for Russia, the situation seemed more dire as it faced numerous economic sanctions from Western countries. For starters, it could not sell its oil and gas to the US and Europe despite being the primary exporter of these natural resources before its invasion of Ukraine. Additionally, it could not conduct international financial transactions for its trade with other nations because it was cut from the global financial payment system. How is it sustaining its economy, then? More importantly, how has it become the fourth-largest economy in the world? We found out that its war expenses are adding to its GDP growth rate! Such a breath of fresh air to read this. Titan MD C K Venkataraman says, "I want to be one of the nicest guys they knew." "When COVID hit, I had been MD for barely six months. There was a lot of anxiety around how our company would cut costs and conserve cash. By squeezing employees or vendor partners, the loss the company would have made could have been reduced by 10-20%, which is what many companies were trying to do. But they were not realising the fairness aspect and the practical aspect. The fairness aspect is that in the overall equation, when things are going well, shareholders tend to keep a greater part of the prosperity. The employees and vendors get a relatively smaller part, though they are the people who are actually working—it’s their innovation, it’s their hard work that creates that value. The practical part was that if employees, vendors and others were anxious, they would not be firing at their best. If they felt cared for, they would help us rebound faster. That came to me very intuitively. So there were no retrenchments, pay cuts were marginal and reversed, advances were given to vendor partners and we helped transport karigars by flight or buses, depending on the situation. We did all that without thinking of the results because it was a fair thing to do. All those people took it upon themselves to give back to the company. The recovery was superfast for our company."
