We're continuing our look at business challenges and how to resolve them! Marketing and advertising can be especially difficult, and this is even more true for a small business. You have to make time to brainstorm clever ideas and then figure out how to execute them in a way that draws people in. Some businesses have teams dedicated to this project, but if you're a small business, dedicating an entire team may not be possible. So, what do you do? 👉 Block off time weekly to give time and attention to this area of your business. 👉 Keep your social media platforms up to date and interesting. Posting sporadically can diminish your online presence. 👉 Make your website as user friendly as possible and make sure you have Search Engine Optimization tools in place to generate traffic. 👉 If you have a physical location, keep it inviting and even consider holding events periodically throughout the year. We've also explored some tools in the past that can help you optimize your reach. Fact #1: This year, businesses will spend hundreds of millions of dollars worldwide redoing their websites to generate more leads. Fact #2: Most of these new websites will fail to make ANY noticeable difference whatsoever. In fact, many will LOSE leads because of the change. Why is this? Friends, before you blow up any website to get more leads, you should ask yourself the following: 1. Do we produce quality content (text, video, etc.) every week that goes on the website and addresses our customers' most fundamental needs and questions? (i.e. They Ask, You Answer) 2. Does our website messaging make the buyer (and their problems) the hero while making us the "guide" to solve their problems? (i.e. StoryBrand) 3. Do we have interactive tools, assessments, etc. that allow visitors to engage with us deeper and learn what they want before reaching out? (i.e. ScoreApp) 4. Do we truly understand conversion rate optimization and have we designed our site accordingly? (the classic book "Don't Make Me Think" by Steve Krug comes to mind here) 5. Do we truly have a website problem? Or is it an overall marketing strategy problem? In reality, 90% of the companies that will spend thousands this year on a new website can't even clearly answer one of the five questions. No bueno. So do yourself a favor. Before you blow half your marketing budget (or more) for the year on a new website, ask yourself if you're doing these other five things. If not, you may want to hit "pause" and consider a better approach.

Some things seem like a waste of time and money: strategy, branding, messaging,... especially when you "just" need a new website! I've been on the buyer side of this - and like most people, I don't want to spend my hard-earned money on "a brand", or spend weeks working on "a strategy" before I can start getting things done. But, from experience, I know that skipping those has hidden costs. Last week alone, I talked with 3 different people who had a website built in the past 6 months, and are now realising that website doesn't fit their needs. Thousands of dollars/euros/pounds down the drain... (at least, so they thought - help is on its way now). When that happens, you've got 3 options: 1. Do nothing: realise that your website is not what you wanted, but it cost you enough time & money already so you'll just find different ways to sell your products and services. 2. Fiddle around with this yourself: still no strategy required - make changes gradually whenever inspiration strikes you, and maybe someday you'll get it right. 3. Sit down with someone who can help you see the big picture. Someone outside your company who knows what companies like yours need, but also understands your unique position and works with you to make a plan - not just for fixing your website, but for the next step, and the next.
