One study I think about often shows that 75% of relationships between board chairs and executive directors go south resulting in either the board chair departing, the executive director departing—or BOTH!
So much can be done to minimize tensions—right from the get-go. One key area is acknowledging what each person brings to the relationship. Both board chairs and executive directors have different life experiences and biases, we all do based on our unique personal and professional lives.
But these different ways of thinking can be supported by adding clarity to organizational processes and procedure. I know it sounds small, but your board chair knowing how a donation is processed for example, might stop time-consuming lines of questioning before they start! And yes, I once mediated a challenging bump in a chair/ed relationship that stemmed from trying to understand this very issue!
Be open. Be transparent. Be the 25% of relationships that thrive!
