Malaysia China Golden Jubilee - A Pivotal Point for Our Future Malaysia-China diplomatic relations have progressed steadily over the last five decades since the signing of a Joint Communiqué in Beijing on 31 May 1974. Malaysia's bold decision to be the first ASEAN Member State to formalize diplomatic relations with China in 1974 created a new chapter in ASEAN-China relations. For 50 years, economic partnership has served as the main pillar of our diplomatic ties and will continue to become the bedrock of our future cooperation. Trade and investment relations between Malaysia and China have deepened, with China becoming Malaysia’s largest trading partner since 2009. Malaysia and China have also agreed to implement the second cycle of the Malaysia-China Five-Year Programme for Economic and Trade Cooperation. This initiative will further deepen linkages between our industries in priority sectors like high-level manufacturing, digital economy, robotics, entrepreneur development, innovation & startup, as well as R&D in agriculture and primary industries. Southeast Asia at the crossroads: Three paths to prosperity The Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) encompasses Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam—countries with a multitude of ethnicities and languages as well as wide economic disparities. But these nations are tied together by multiple threads of history and culture, and today they are increasingly linked by business networks, trade relationships, migration, and shared resources. Almost five decades after the organization’s founding, ASEAN is pursuing more ambitious goals for integration. 

In the realm of trade and commerce, few shine as brightly as His Excellency PICH Rithi, Secretary of State of the Ministry of Commerce, Cambodia. His journey in public service since 1993 is a testament to the power of dedicated leadership and strategic vision. 🔹He has been pivotal in shaping trade policies, attracting foreign investment, and boosting both domestic and international trade. His role in representing Cambodia in regional trade forums and business discussions has been instrumental, working with other ASEAN countries. 🔹From inaugurating the Indian Business Chamber to welcoming international delegations, H.E. Rithi's commitment to enhancing bilateral relations is evident. His efforts in agricultural trade with China and advocating for Cambodian products on global platforms are commendable. 🔹Our conversation also touched on the importance of aligning business strategies with national development goals, a crucial aspect for sustainable growth. 57th ASEAN DAY On 8 August 1967, five leaders – the Foreign Ministers of Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore and Thailand – sat down together in the main hall of the Department of Foreign Affairs building in Bangkok, Thailand and signed a document. By virtue of that document, the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) was born. The five Foreign Ministers who signed it – Adam Malik of Indonesia, Narciso R. Ramos of the Philippines, Tun Abdul Razak of Malaysia, S. Rajaratnam of Singapore, and Thanat Khoman of Thailand – would subsequently be hailed as the Founding Fathers of probably the most successful inter-governmental organization in the developing world today. And the document that they signed would be known as the ASEAN Declaration. ASEAN Day 2024 is the 57th anniversary. The theme is "Connected & Resilient Community" This year's theme focuses on historical milestones and future aspirations, such as sustainable development, digital transformation and a resilient economy.
