Ahead of Chief Executive John Lee’s upcoming mission to Laos, Cambodia and Vietnam, Chamber Chairman Agnes Chan, BBS said the outreach initiative showed Hong Kong’s sincerity in fostering closer ties with ASEAN countries. Speaking at a media briefing yesterday, Chan said she was honoured to be part of the high-level HKSAR delegation visiting the three nations from 28 July to 2 August. With the global economy's centre of gravity shifting eastward, ASEAN is emerging as a dynamic force. Amid current geopolitical tensions, Hong Kong businesses must seize opportunities to diversify their markets, said Chan. ASEAN countries, in particular, are seen as attractive destinations for foreign direct investments due to the favourable incentives they offer. In a recent member survey by the Chamber’s Asia, Africa and Middle East Committee, 65% of the respondents ranked ASEAN as their focus in the coming 12 months. Chan said the HKSAR mission, which will explore how Hong Kong’s professional services can participate in and contribute to the growth of the three countries, will deepen economic and trade relations and promote cooperation. #hkgcc #hongkong #hongkongbusiness #asean #laos #cambodia #vietnam #economicpartnerships

Malaysia China Golden Jubilee - A Pivotal Point for Our Future Malaysia-China diplomatic relations have progressed steadily over the last five decades since the signing of a Joint Communiqué in Beijing on 31 May 1974. Malaysia's bold decision to be the first ASEAN Member State to formalize diplomatic relations with China in 1974 created a new chapter in ASEAN-China relations. For 50 years, economic partnership has served as the main pillar of our diplomatic ties and will continue to become the bedrock of our future cooperation. Trade and investment relations between Malaysia and China have deepened, with China becoming Malaysia’s largest trading partner since 2009. Malaysia and China have also agreed to implement the second cycle of the Malaysia-China Five-Year Programme for Economic and Trade Cooperation. This initiative will further deepen linkages between our industries in priority sectors like high-level manufacturing, digital economy, robotics, entrepreneur development, innovation & startup, as well as R&D in agriculture and primary industries. For Malaysia, the 50th anniversary is not just a celebration of a milestone but a pivotal point to chart the future of our economic cooperation that focuses on national and regional development. #China #MalaysiaMADANI #MITI #ThisIsWhereGlobalStarts #TZA

57th ASEAN DAY On 8 August 1967, five leaders – the Foreign Ministers of Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore and Thailand – sat down together in the main hall of the Department of Foreign Affairs building in Bangkok, Thailand and signed a document. By virtue of that document, the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) was born. The five Foreign Ministers who signed it – Adam Malik of Indonesia, Narciso R. Ramos of the Philippines, Tun Abdul Razak of Malaysia, S. Rajaratnam of Singapore, and Thanat Khoman of Thailand – would subsequently be hailed as the Founding Fathers of probably the most successful inter-governmental organization in the developing world today. And the document that they signed would be known as the ASEAN Declaration. ASEAN Day 2024 is the 57th anniversary. The theme is "Connected & Resilient Community" This year's theme focuses on historical milestones and future aspirations, such as sustainable development, digital transformation and a resilient economy. Let's remember history so we can learn. As we welcome the visit of Chinese Premier Li Qiang to Malaysia, we are reminded of the strong and long-standing relationship between our two countries. This year marks the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and Malaysia, making it the "China-Malaysia Friendship Year." Premier Li Qiang has expressed China's willingness to continue to prioritize our relationship and work towards building a community of shared future between our two countries. #EastCoastRailLink #TwinParks As Malaysia welcomes foreign investment and cooperation, it is crucial that we approach these opportunities with a clear understanding of our goals and priorities. We must not only attract investment in high-tech sectors such as green energy, digital economy, and AI, but also ensure that these investments bring tangible benefits to the local economy and people. This requires a careful and strategic approach to negotiating with foreign investors and setting clear expectations from the outset. It is important that Malaysia does not fall into the trap of one-sided benefits, where foreign investors reap huge rewards while local communities are left out. We must be vigilant in ensuring that any foreign investment projects bring real value to our country and contribute to our long-term development goals. This means prioritizing projects that create meaningful employment opportunities, transfer technology and skills to local workers, and promote sustainable growth in our communities. #ChinaMalaysiaFriendship #ForeignInvestment #EconomicCooperation #WinWinPartnership #SharedFuture
