Celebrating International Human Rights Day: Advancing Equity and Justice in Our World Today, on International Human Rights Day, we stand together to reaffirm the fundamental rights and dignity inherent to every human being. These rights are not privileges bestowed by any government or institution; they are inherent to our existence. From the right to life and freedom from torture to the right to education and a decent standard of living, these principles form the bedrock of a just and equitable society. Yet, millions around the world continue to face discrimination, violence, and oppression, denied the very rights that are meant to protect them. As we reflect on the progress made in the realm of human rights, we must also acknowledge the challenges that remain. Inequalities based on race, gender, religion, sexual orientation, disability, and other factors continue to fuel injustice and suffering. So, what can we do? On this International Human Rights Day, let's pledge to: Educate ourselves and others on the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and other human rights instruments. Speak up against discrimination and injustice, wherever we see it. Support organizations working to protect and promote human rights. Hold governments and corporations accountable for upholding human rights standards. Advocate for policies and practices that promote equality and inclusion. Remember: every action, however small, can contribute to a world where human rights are respected and upheld for everyone. Here are some additional resources you may find helpful: The United Nations Human Rights Let us use this International Human Rights Day as a springboard for action. Let us commit ourselves to building a world where everyone can live with dignity, freedom, and justice. #HumanRightsDay #StandUp4HumanRights #Equality #Justice

Yesterday was International Human Rights Day and the 75th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR), which was proclaimed by the United Nations General Assembly in Paris on December 10, 1948, and set out, for the first time, fundamental human rights to be universally protected. The groundbreaking global pledge aims to protect the inalienable rights that everyone is entitled to as a human being - regardless of race, color, religion, sex, language, political affiliation, national or social origin, property, birth, or other status. While the Declaration is not technically binding as a matter of international law, it inspired the creation of nine international human rights treaties such as the Convention Against Torture, the Genocide Convention, the Convention on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination on People with Disabilities, and Women’s Rights, among others. The principles of the UDHR have served as the foundation for an expanding system of human rights protections, needed more today than ever as equality rights face new challenges, such as the fallout of the COVID-19 pandemic, ongoing global conflicts, and the new realities of climate change. This year’s theme is “Freedom, Equality and Justice for All,” and it “seeks to shift the needle of understanding and action towards greater knowledge of the universality of the UDHR and the activism associated with it.” “One Day, I Will” is an inspiring United Nations exhibit documenting the stories of children aged 6-18 years old who are trapped in humanitarian crises across the globe, whether caused by conflict, natural disasters, or the global pandemic and highlights each child’s hope and vision for a better future. Human Rights Day (December 10th) is an important reminder that the journey to universal human rights is ongoing. As I reflect on the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, I feel grateful to the courageous women and men who advocated for this foundational document. It established crucial concepts like equal dignity and justice for all people regardless of identity or status. However, the vision of the Declaration has still not been fully realized around the world. Basic human rights like freedom from discrimination, fair working conditions, and free speech continue to be denied to marginalized communities. Issues like poverty, lack of access to education, and gender inequality persist globally. There is still so much work to be done. Progress takes all of us working together across diverse experiences and beliefs to build connection and achieve the vision outlined decades ago – one of freedom, justice and peace for all people. I believe in that vision and in our collective power to achieve it. Join me in recommitting to advocate for dignity, justice, and equal opportunity in our workplaces and communities. December 10th marks Human Rights Day (https://lnkd.in/g9HMHg-F), commemorating the day in 1948 when the United Nations General Assembly adopted the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR). This seminal document outlined the fundamental rights and freedoms that all human beings are entitled to, regardless of race, color, religion, sex, language, political or other opinion, national or social origin, property, birth or other status. Human Rights Day provides an important opportunity for all of us to reflect on the progress made in upholding these universal human rights, while also acknowledging the work still needed. In many parts of the world, people continue to face discrimination, persecution, and lack of basic freedoms and dignity. Issues like poverty, access to education, gender equality, fair working conditions, arbitrary detention, and free speech remain ongoing human rights challenges. As we mark Human Rights Day, it is important to consider how these ideals apply not only globally but also locally in our workplace. Here at the Office Of Inclusion and Civil Rights, NOAA, our mission is to establish and maintain programs that uphold equal employment opportunity and diversity/inclusion by complying with laws that protect human rights. Our vision is to be a model organization that embraces human rights as a core value. By reflecting on how human rights apply to our organization, we reaffirm our commitment to protecting the dignity and equality of all people. Learning about human rights issues and the struggles faced by marginalized groups in our communities and around the world help us to advocate for policies and programs that will expand rights and opportunities. We can have compassion for those treated unfairly and dedicate ourselves to making a difference in whatever ways we can. The declaration of human rights was a major milestone, but the journey to make these rights a reality for everyone continues. Today marks the 75th annual Human Rights Day, which was established by the 1948 UN Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Available in over 500 languages, the UDHR is the most translated document in the world, numerating globally inalienable rights that everyone is entitled to as a human being regardless of race, gender, nationality, sexual orientation, ability or any other status. As global human rights are intertwined with the national, state and local causes with which we engage at BCom, let’s take a look at some key points established by the Universal Declaration of Human Rights: 🌎 Human rights violations reverberate across borders and generations. 🌎 Efforts anchored in human rights have created better outcomes for women, children, Indigenous populations, incarcerated individuals and more. 🌎 Progress should not result in complacency, as we all have a role to play in protecting and advancing human rights in our communities.

On this #HumanRightsDay and #UDHR75, are we truly living up to the principles of the #udhr? We can't ignore the progress: from greater awareness and activism to advances in child rights, gender equality, and disability rights, there's reason to celebrate. But challenges remain: the #Universality #Inalienability #Indivisibility & #Interdependence of #HumanRights are increasingly threatened. Violations like torture, discrimination, VAWG, VAC, and restrictions on civil and political rights are alarming. #climatechange further threatens our fundamental rights. We must work together to advance #DignityFreedomJustice and #standup4humanrights ! https://lnkd.in/d46CkKeG
