#Inclusion is key to realize the promise of the #SDGs but there can not be full inclusion while children and young people are unable to participate & learn, including due to limited access to assistive technology (AT). Many of those who need AT but don’t have it are more likely to be out of school than those who do & commonly do not receive the education they need🦽 We were honoured to speak during the #SummitOfTheFuture Side Event on the role of partnerships in #Education and #AssistiveTechnology to transform education and employment opportunities for children and young people with disabilities #GDIHub #AT2030Programme #YouthLead #UnlockTheEveryday #OurCommonFuture #UNGA79 ATscale, the Global Partnership for Assistive Technology International Disability Alliance Global Partnership for Education UNICEF UNOPS

Day 3 We're in #Wassu, #CRR, continuing our regional stakeholder orientation campaign to raise awareness and promote the inclusion of Persons with Disabilities (#PWDs) in #TheGambia. Alagie Gimish Ceesay, Secretary General of the CRR North regional disabled organization "Ku Kutna Mento" (#KKM), shared a concern close to many hearts: "Despite progress, #PWDs in CRR North still face significant barriers to participation in society. Accessibility remains a major issue, from public buildings to transportation systems. We're often excluded from services and opportunities readily available to others." We stand with Alagie and the KKM. Together, we call for increased awareness raising, Everyone deserves to understand the challenges faced by #PWDs. Stronger enforcement of the 2021 #PWDAct, this act guarantees equal rights and opportunities for all. Let's work together to create a more inclusive Gambia for everyone. https://lnkd.in/exMYm-Ru #NationalCouncilforCivicEducation-TheGambia #UNICEFGambia #GambiaFederationOfTheDisabled. #UNPRPD #disabilityinclusion #equalrightsforall

Accessibility, one of the UN CRPD principles and as a right (article 9 in UN CRPD), is so vital for the participation of people with disabilities in education, employment and social life, and it is not possible to understand why large and institutional public and private organizations resist not to implement accessibility physically and digitally. Sometimes, even though the UN CRPD Committee says that reasonable accommodation does not replace accessibility, they insist on settling for instant solutions even Confusing the two concepts. It is a fact that without accessibility, people with disabilities will be confined to homes and institutions and cannot even go out. For sincere disability inclusion, the principle of accessibility needs to be taken seriously immediately. Especially in Turkey, the country where I live. #accessibility #UNCRPD #ReasonableAccommodation

The funding gap for IDEA in FY2024 stands at $23.63 billion. This shortfall affects the quality of education for millions of children with disabilities. It’s crucial to advocate for full funding to bridge this gap. #SELS2024 #4SpecialEducation

It's Global Accessibility Awareness Day #GAAD (May 16th) 🥳 Unfortunately this day was started as only IT and technology focused so most talks and learning opportunities will be on only those topics. Also many in the disability community feel this day, like others, is fraught with performative accessibility and imagining success at sometime forever over the horizon, rather than meaningful design changes now that result in widespread, actually usable, equitable access. Wanting to be better is good. Awareness days get old and feel pointless or disingenuous when 13 years later "awareness" hasn't translated into substantially improved access or stopped the same mistakes and discriminatory results. "Awareness" doesn't seem to be fixing education, or getting the status quo, standard practice and ableist gatekeepers out of the way. "Awareness" of course means nothing without change. Maybe it's finally time to evaluate what's working and not working with GAAD. #a11y #AccessibleCanada #ADA #DDA #EAA #disability #inclusion #accessibility #UniversalDesign #PerformativeAccessibility #CultureChange #Progress #policy #legislation #education #ableism #bias #BillionStrong
