Two nursing students, Emily Boehler and Brayden McDaniel, are working alongside Dr. Marian “Marnie” Reven to make custom aromatherapy inhalers to distribute to students at the WVU Health Sciences Center. During the Fall 2024 semester, the group distributed more than 150 aromatherapy inhalers to students to help improve their mental health and well-being. For the spring semester, they plan to partner with the team at BeWell, a mental health organization dedicated to helping HSC students. https://lnkd.in/ej87qdPn

Q: What is the height of confidence? Jon and Mike are sitting by each other in graduate school. The TA comes by and hands their graded tests back. Mike turns to Jon, “How’d you do on the test?” Glancing at his paper, Jon says “90% - I’ll take it.” Mike ribs him, “HA! I got a 92% “ Jon says, “Congratulations. Good job.” __________________________________________ At a bar, a man flirts with Mike’s girlfriend. Mike confronts the man and makes a scene. He doesn’t think his girlfriend will cheat. But he feels disrespected; a man should respect him and his relationship. At a bar, a man flirts with Jon’s girlfriend. Jon relaxes, enjoys his drink, and eventually leaves with his girlfriend to go home. Someone tells Mike he is graduating nursing school next week. Mike replies, “Oh good for you. I’m actually a doctor.” Someone tells Jon he is graduating nursing school next week. Jon replies, genuinely, “Congrats - it is a great field. I’m sure you’ll do great.” Jon is also a doctor. But says nothing. __________________________________________ The absence of ego—calm indifference where others project superiority, effortless silence where others feel compelled to brag—is the height of confidence.

The Johns Hopkins School of Nursing has established a Center for Equity in Child and Youth Health and Wellbeing. This is the first center at the School of Nursing dedicated solely to advancing science, practice, and policies affecting the health and wellbeing of infants, children, adolescents, young adults, and their families, with a focus on underserved communities locally and globally. Co-directed by Deborah Gross, DNSc, RN, FAAN, Leonard and Helen R. Stulman Professor in Psychiatric and Mental Health Nursing, and Eliana Perrin, MD, MPH, FAAP, Bloomberg Distinguished Professor, the center unites the expertise of faculty from the School of Nursing and several Johns Hopkins medical partners to create a multidisciplinary approach to helping children and families thrive. Aliyah Dosani BN MPH PhD, RN FCAN, Jocelyn Lehman and Alexander Cuncannon from Mount Royal University have amended a small group assignment (Dosani, Lind, & Loewen, 2019) that focuses on #teaching second year #nursing students about community health nursing interventions for social justice issues. Authors added a creative component to enable students to express what #socialjustice means to them and students were asked to create a visual symbol or art piece. Once I presented to a group of university students who were studying to be Physical Education students. The topic was about including disabled students like my son in PE and recess. Before I spoke, the instructor got up and said to them: Inclusion is YOUR responsibility, NOT this mom's responsibility. That was a powerful statement and it makes me think about the heavy burden that is placed on people. This can be applied to the weight of patient advocacy at point of care too. It is NOT solely my responsibility to speak up in hostile clinical environments. It is YOUR responsibility as policy makers and clinicians to make sure health care environments offer patients safety, respect and dignity. STOP placing the responsibility on the individual to speak up. As patients, or families of disabled loved ones, we are already stressed. The personal accountability schtick is a cop out designed to avoid system accountability to provide quality care. Instead, do what you can do to change the system to make it more humane for us all...whatever is in your control, one step at a time. (Yes, I've written two entire books about this).

It starts at the Pre-PA levels and cascades across program directors and institutions all the way up to our PA organizations to actively work on supporting and elevating these measures.
