Exciting news! We are thrilled to introduce Terrill D. McFarland (Terrill H.) as the incoming Chief Executive Officer of Hopebound. With a steadfast commitment to advocating for the mental health needs of young individuals, Terrill is poised to lead Hopebound in its mission to revolutionize access to mental health and wellness support for youth from historically marginalized communities. Terrill holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Child and Adolescent Development from Howard University and a Master’s degree in Industrial-Organizational Psychology from Harvard University. Her extensive and distinguished professional career spans over two decades, characterized by tireless efforts to secure comprehensive resources for young individuals and their families, notably within the military community. Terrill understands the considerable responsibilities that lie ahead and is committed to upholding the esteemed legacy of founder Christina Guilbeau. She eagerly looks forward to working with the dedicated and passionate Hopebound team and Board of Directors. “Our goal at Hopebound is to empower and support young individuals by breaking down barriers to mental health services,” says Terrill. “I am honored and excited to join Hopebound and lead this incredible organization in addressing the pressing social challenges facing our community. Together, we will work tirelessly to ensure that our clients have access to the mental health services and support they deserve.” Under Terrill's leadership, Hopebound will continue its commitment to ensuring that every young person aged 10 to 18, especially those who hold marginalized identities, has access to quality mental health care. We're also delighted to formally announce a new addition to Hopebound, Araya McGee. Araya joined us as an Operations Associate in March, and the support she’s already provided to the organization has been immense. Previously, Araya has supported the operations of various small businesses and nonprofit organizations. She earned her Masters in Business Administration as well as her Masters of Public Administration with a focus on nonprofit management. Araya went on to work with programs supporting people living with HIV/AIDS, those dealing with various mental health issues, as well as folks from underserved communities. Araya was inspired to join the Hopebound team as her personal values closely align with Hopebound’s mission of revolutionizing mental health care for youth from historically marginalized communities. She is motivated to serve her community in a way that increases racial, economic, and health equity. Join us in welcoming Araya to the Hopebound team 💙

Hopebound’s Board of Directors is pleased to announce the appointment of Tenijah Hamilton and Ian Smith as Interim Co-Executive Directors, effective May 13, 2024. The transformative power of community is the heartbeat of our organization—it is baked into how we serve, the ways in which we serve, and the fundamental reason why we serve—and Ian and Tenijah will collectively steward our organization's future and enable Hopebound to honor the community-driven approach they both espouse. This leadership transition comes as the organization embarks on a search for a permanent Executive Director, as Terrill McFarland is no longer with the organization. We want to thank Terrill for her contributions and wish her the best in her future endeavors. Tenijah and Ian have spent the past two years leading Hopebound’s important work as the Chief Community Officer and Senior Director of Operations, respectively. Together, they bring a wealth of experience to their new roles and a demonstrated deep commitment to Hopebound's mission and vision, and under their programmatic leadership, we have just concluded our most successful school year of clinical programming to date. Some highlights: ✨ A record high community partner and caregiver satisfaction rate. ✨ Every caregiver who completed our end-of-year survey requested to return for services for the following school year—a first for Hopebound! ✨ Every clinician rated their satisfaction with our program as 5/5, and their NPS score is 100%. ✨ Along with extending offers to our largest and most diverse Atlanta emerging clinical cohort to date, we have also grown our community partnerships by 75% for the 2024-2025 school year. A word from Christina Guilbeau, Hopebound’s Founder and former Executive Director: “Both Ian and Tenijah have demonstrated exceptional dedication to our mission of revolutionizing mental health care and creating a more inclusive and accessible environment for all young people. Hopebound is incredibly grateful to be one of 16 grantees selected to be a part of the ICONIQ Impact's $56M Economic Mobility fund. This support has been invaluable and enables us to revolutionize access to mental health support for even more young people from historically marginalized communities. Thank you, ICONIQ!
A child’s future success is often inextricably tied to factors out of their control, such as their gender, race, or zip code. In the United States, fewer than one in 13 kids born into poverty will go on to hold a high-income job in adulthood, and this number falls to just one in 40 for Black children. To help close the opportunity gap in the United States, we and our partners launched the Education & Economic Mobility Co-Lab—a $56M collaborative philanthropy fund supporting 16 grantees working on improving mental health in schools, helping marginalized parents access education and wrap-around social services, and establishing career pathways for underserved communities. The Co-Lab offers each organization unrestricted grant funding for three years, because we know our grantees are the experts and we want them to have the freedom to plan for the long-term. They have a deep understanding of the challenges they’re working to solve, the communities they serve, and how their funding should be spent. The grantees work across three key areas: 💼 Seven of the Co-Lab’s organizations are providing more #EquitableCareerPathways for marginalized youth by ensuring all students and young professionals have access to the types of paid internships, vocational trainings, and apprenticeships that lead to high-wage jobs. 🧠 Five of the Co-Lab’s organizations are improving #YouthMentalHealth by advancing local and federal policy, supporting student-led mental health advocacy, increasing access to teletherapy for the most at-risk youth, and more. 👨👩👦 Four of the Co-Lab’s organizations are bolstering #TwoGenerationSolutions, supporting underserved caregivers, like single parents and first-generation families, with everything from ensuring school readiness for their children to earning a college degree. Dear Hopebound Community, When I founded this organization five years ago, I could have never imagined the vibrant, beautiful, and incredibly powerful community that would rise up to help us achieve our mission of revolutionizing access to mental health support for young people. Recently, I transitioned from the role of Executive Director to that of a strategic advisor, and I am living proof that no one person is the steward of this vision. Our clients are. Their parents and caregivers are. Every single one of our partners, team members, clinicians, and supporters are. And you are. So, it is up to all of us to change the broken system of care as we know it so it can become the restorative care that knows us. A couple of days ago, a former Hopebound client named Leah* got in touch. She’s now a college student, and like many of the young people we work with, came from a background where she was underresourced and underserved. She wrote to thank Hopebound and to let us know that she was interested in volunteering with us to, in her words, “help my [BIPOC and LGBTQ+] community in any way I can.” Stories like Leah's, where we’ve played even a small part in empowering the next generation to help others, is what it is all about. When I think about this story and the power of a school year's worth of therapy sessions, I feel grateful for the Hopebound community and all you have made possible for the young people we serve. You help to ensure that we’re able to deliver high-impact and low-cost therapy to our future changemakers and that their ability to pay is never a barrier. We know so many more young people are in need of that support, and that’s why this year, for Giving Tuesday (and through the end of 2023), we have an audacious new goal: alongside our Board of Directors, we aim to raise $40,000, enabling us to provide care to more adolescents than ever before.
