This #BlackMaternalHealthWeek ➡️ Jen, a labor nurse, shares a powerful truth: Black women face a different reality in childbirth. Why? Implicit bias and systemic disparities lead to: *Higher risk: Black women are 4 times more likely to die from pregnancy complications than white women, often due to unconscious bias in healthcare. *Unequal access: Quality prenatal care, pain management, and postpartum support are harder to find in Black communities. We can change this. Here's what YOU can do: *Educate yourself: Learn about disparities & share resources. *Demand action: Contact your congressional delegation and demand that they support the #MomnibusAct #HopeCollectiveInc #blackmaternalhealthweek #BIPOC #HealthEquity #RuralHealth #Equity

Bias and systemic and structural racism are at the core of poor maternal health outcomes in women of color. The way that women and their families are perceived and treated during pregnancy, birth, and afterward affects their birth experiences and the outcome. The need to recognize and address the racial disparities in maternal health outcomes is the first step. Women of color deserve access to quality healthcare and fair treatment during their pregnancy and birth experiences. We must work towards creating a more equitable healthcare system that provides safe and respectful care to all women, regardless of their race or ethnicity. By acknowledging and addressing the impact of bias and systemic racism on maternal health outcomes, we can work towards improving the health and well-being of all women and their families. Let's talk about a sobering reality: each year in the US, hundreds of lives are lost during pregnancy or in the year after. Alarmingly, Black women face a threefold higher risk of pregnancy-related death compared to white women. This isn't just about biology—it's about systemic disparities. Factors like unequal healthcare access, chronic conditions, and implicit bias play a role. It's time to address social determinants of health. Everyone deserves equal opportunities for health and well-being. By listening, recognizing warning signs, and ensuring timely, respectful care, we can prevent many of these tragedies. Let's work together to make pregnancy safer for all. #MaternalHealth #HealthEquity #BlackMaternalHealth #PregnancySafety #BMHW24 #MaternalHealthAwareness

🔍 𝐔𝐫𝐠𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐂𝐚𝐥𝐥 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐂𝐨𝐦𝐩𝐥𝐢𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐢𝐧 𝐂𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐧𝐢𝐚'𝐬 𝐌𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐇𝐞𝐚𝐥𝐭𝐡𝐜𝐚𝐫𝐞 A recent report from California's Justice Department reveals a troubling reality: the vast majority of California hospitals have not fully complied with the 2020 Dignity in Pregnancy and Childbirth Act, crucial for implicit bias training in perinatal care. This lack of compliance starkly impacts African American women, who face disproportionately high maternal mortality rates. In California, Black women are three to four times more likely to die during childbirth than their non-Hispanic white counterparts. 🚨 Only 17.35% of hospitals have completed the required training. This is not just a compliance issue; it's a matter of life and death. The training is vital in addressing the biases that contribute to these disparities. The lack of public access to compliance data and the shielding of Maternal Mortality Quality Review Committees' records from public view exacerbates the problem. It's time for transparency and accountability. We must demand immediate action to safeguard the lives of African American mothers and their infants. Let's start a conversation on how we can collectively push for compliance and protect the most vulnerable. #MaternalHealth #HealthcareCompliance #RacialDisparity #PublicHealth

To our VIC-based Community We know first-hand that women face real and life-altering challenges when seeking care and support for pain. In a recent survey published by the Victorian Government, 50% of women said that pregnancy and birth complications continued to impact their health. It's exactly what we have been saying for years, and it was further highlighted in our 2022 Birth Injuries Report. Our community frequently tells us that they were not believed or were told their symptoms were 'normal' when seeking support for ongoing physical symptoms after birth. So let's make some noise about it. The Inquiry into Women’s Pain is now accepting written submissions that will help inform future models of care and service delivery. The Inquiry will listen to the voices of girls and women across all walks of life, as well as clinicians, researchers and health service organisations. Black mothers in the U.S. are more likely than White mothers to face pregnancy complications, to die from a pregnancy-related cause, or to have a baby with a low birthweight. #NCHealthConnex is helping to develop solutions to these disparities by fulfilling the data exchange and dashboard requirements of the UNC-led study, ACURE4Moms, or Accountability for Care through Undoing Racism and Equity for Moms. The study seeks to improve health outcomes for Black mothers and infants by addressing institutional racism and bias in health care processes, gathering health care data and providing community-based, social support in the form of doulas. A Maternal Early Warning System generates alerts with information available through NC HealthConnex and is set up through NC*Notify, a subscription-based alert service that lets providers know when a patient has gone to an emergency department with a pregnancy complication. #MaternalHealthAwarenessDay

Mapping the human experience to improve the health care system. Entrepreneur | Listener | Advocate | CEO | Friend, wife, mom, woman
I do not need to tell you, dear reader, of the maternal health crisis happening in this country, impacting women from every walk of life, regardless of income bracket. As we search for solutions to the maternal health crisis, we must do so by centering the voices of people affected most. The data shows us our health care system is failing mothers of color. By engaging in conversations with women of color about their maternal health experiences, we uncovered crucial insights into challenges within our current maternal health care system. In our conversations, three overarching themes emerged: 1️⃣Differential treatment, dismissal, and racism during the pregnancy journey 2️⃣ Limited knowledge and experiences with midwives and doulas 3️⃣ Lack of postpartum support Lets aim our solutions to these needs! Let’s save lives and ensure that all women can experience a * joyful, safe, and supported* pregnancy. (Link to these findings in comment)

Centering #BlackMaternalHealth and wellness is not just a week on our calendar, it's a value and priority that guides all of our work. Follow Black Mamas Matter Alliance, Inc. (BMMA) for more on the need for #BlackMaternalHealthWeek and how you can participate!
#BlackMaternalHealth is an everyone problem. If we are allowing Black birthing people to go into the birthing room with a risk of mortality on par with some of the lowest-resource countries in the world, what does that say about us as a country? If we have abundant access to money and technology and education yet we still allow the color of someone's skin dictate whether they receive high quality care during pregnancy and birth, what does that say about our healthcare system? If you are enjoying an empowered, safe, and healthy perinatal journey but not using your privilege to ensure ALL parents and babes get this experience as well, what does that say about you as a parent? Everyone should be investing in solving the racism and healthcare crisis. At Nurturely, perinatal equity is not just a week, it is a centerpoint of our work and the primary focus of our multicultural team. Thank you to Black Mamas Matter Alliance, Inc. (BMMA) for founding #BlackMaternalHealthWeek to raise awareness of this urgent cause. #BMHW24 #maternalhealth
