Check out this recently released article from Lubbers et al.: bit.ly/3UoPdka    The authors identified patients at an emergency department (ED) who were at high risk of developing persisting symptoms, or postconcussion syndrome (PCS), after mild traumatic brain injuries (mTBI). The authors found seven major risk factors for PCS that ED doctors can swiftly examine: headaches, neurological symptoms, neck pain at the ED, female sex, a history of psychiatric conditions, preexisting sleep problems, and abnormalities found on a CT scan.     Because of data access limitations and the complexity of PCS detection, it was difficult to have a more detailed analysis and compare results across studies. Despite that, the risk factors found by Lubbers et al. can help doctors identify patients at higher risk of PCS, and they can ensure that they receive the necessary care and support quickly to support recovery.

Long-term impact traumatic brain injuries (TBIs) can have significant implications for rehabilitation needs. As an expert witness, I am often asked to determine how much rehab a patient will need and for how long. This study, part of the Transforming Research and Clinical Knowledge in Traumatic Brain Injury (TRACK-TBI) initiative, provides valuable insights into answering these questions. The cohort study analyzed outcomes at 1 and 3 to 7 years post-index TBI enrollment for 2417 participants. Those experiencing post-index TBIs exhibited significant challenges in functional recovery, health-related quality of life, and mental well-being. The risk was heightened for those with a psychiatric history or pre-index TBIs. Multiple post-index TBIs correlated with even graver outcomes. These findings underscore the need for long-term, sustained follow-up care for TBI patients. 🌟 Why is Vestibular Migraine Linked to Many Comorbidities? 🌟 Exploring the complexities of Vestibular Migraine (VM), which is often a major trigger of episodic vertigo. Patients with VM experience unsettling sensations such as spinning and unsteadiness. But it doesn't stop there! VM often brings along friends like photophobia, phonophobia, and motor intolerance, complicating the picture even further. VM is often accompanied by a host of comorbidities. Anxiety, fear, and depression can gradually evolve into anxiety or depressive disorders. Sleep disorders, another common companion of VM, can significantly lower patients' quality of life. The intertwined influence of anxiety and sleep problems may also reduce cognitive functions, affecting visuospatial ability, attention, and memory. Diagnosing VM can be tricky when it coexists with other vestibular disorders, making clinical decisions even more challenging. With overlapping symptoms with Meniere's disease and positional vertigo, VM can often be misunderstood. So what's behind these complex connections? Research points to extensive connectivity within the vestibular system and its close association with various brain regions and the trigeminovascular system.
