Next week marks a significant milestone in the movement to address an often-overlooked issue: the 2024 International Conference on Violence Against Men and Boys. After two and a half years of hard work, collaboration, and dedication, this groundbreaking virtual event is finally happening. I'm honored to be opening and closing Day Two of the conference, as well as speaking in a breakout session alongside some of the most inspiring and knowledgeable individuals in this field, John-Michael Lander and Cranford Blackmon. It was with the support of the VAMB Steering Commitee and dozens of incredible volunteers that this event is happening. There is a diverse lineup of expert speakers—spanning from public health organizations, academia, healthcare, criminal justice, and lived experience—we're setting the stage for transformative change. This conference isn't just an event; it's a crucial public health intervention aimed at preventing violence against men and boys. Together, we'll explore the structural determinants of violence, it's devastating impacts on mental and physical health, and how it intersects with issues like education, criminal justice involvement, financial stability, and public safety. I can't wait to see the impact this conference will have on attendees and the broader community. Adopting survivor care principles guarantees the safeguarding of survivors' health (physical, emotional and mental), dignity, wishes, safety, and other crucial aspects. Survivors needs, rights and wishes are paramount when responding. It is essential for all institutions, government offices and the community to adopt survivor care principles. Without these principles, survivors often face difficulties accessing appropriate and quality services, leading to re-traumatization and reluctance to seek help. #RestoringDignity

Mapping the scale of Child Sexual Exploitation & Abuse (CSEA) globally for the first time. 🌎 The fight to protect children from sexual abuse has been hindered for far too long by a lack of data and transparency. We aim to change that by shining a light on the data behind CSEA that is happening worldwide. Our Into The Light Index is the world’s first estimate of the scale of this troubling issue - and it’s a first attempt to produce a global picture based on the collaborative efforts between Childlight researchers and partners leading the fields of data, law enforcement, and safeguarding. At the Alliance for Rights and Recovery, we know that people must be able to choose and access the resources they need to recover and thrive. This requires systemic change that we can only achieve by working together to advocate for policies that ensure access to resources for a dignified, self-directed life! This means putting boots on the ground to secure funding for critical services like supportive housing and community-based behavioral health services while advocating for criminal justice reform and investment in the mental health care field and its workers. By utilizing our large network of professionals, organizations, and programs, we push for transformative legislative change that fosters recovery and defends human rights across the country.
