Another positive clinical benefit for E-merge Capital Partners portfolio company RetractOrtho. Radiation scatter is not just a cath lab and EP lab issue. Radiation scatter also happens multiple times per day in the orthopedic OR setting exposing the surgeons and staff to significant amounts of radiation. The radiation scatter study conducted by RetractOrtho shows that the use of nylon retractors reduces radiation scatter by 50% compared to standard steel retractors. That's significant especially when you look at radiation exposure over the careers of both surgeons and staff. Radiation studies in the cath lab have shown that the effects of radiation scatter are real and result in a 6x increase in cataracts, 3x increase in cancer (skin, carcinoma, thyroid, brain) and a 2x increase in cardiovascular disease for individuals who are exposed regularly to radiation compared to those that are not. #radiation #orthopedics #radiationscatter #hospitalsafety #operatingroom

Huge congratulations to Dr. Evan Richman for his outstanding podium presentation on radiation scatter comparing steel retractors versus nylon retractors at the American Society for Surgery of the Hand annual meeting🌟 Dr. Richman’s research sheds important light on the critical issue of clinician safety and radiation exposure in the operating room. By highlighting the benefits of hands-free, radiolucent surgical retractors, Dr. Richman has demonstrated how these innovative tools can significantly reduce radiation scatter, offering enhanced protection for clinicians while maintaining surgical precision. This is a big step forward in ensuring safer operating environments for everyone involved. Kudos to Dr. Richman and Louis W. Catalano III, MD for their dedication to advancing both patient care and clinician safety! #SurgicalInnovation #RadiationSafety #ClinicianHealth #MedicalResearch #RadiolucentTools #RetractOrtho #handsfree

Publication announcement! 📢 We are very proud to share that our #scoliosis work has been recognised in the Global Spine Journal (GSJ) 🔬 The Global Spine Congress 2024 Abstracts Special Issue contains two published articles authored by The London Orthotic Consultancy, led by Senior Orthotists Anna Courtney and Sam Walmsley. The first abstract, ‘On-site clinician-led bracing algorithm with short clinical feedback loops lead to significant improvements in bracing outcomes’ examines how our approach to conservative treatment with the #LOCScoliosisBrace achieves better outcomes. The other paper, ‘Assessing the presentation of adolescents seeking bracing treatment in the UK, using SRS bracing guidelines’ looks at the current metrics used when determining whether a patient should treat their scoliosis with surgery or bracing, and whether these remain to be applicable. A big thank you to our coauthors St George's University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust for the hard and exciting work behind these papers, including Darren F. Lui, Jason Bernard and Tim Bishop. That's a wrap on our Medico-Legal Issues in Trauma conference. This afternoon's programme covered vascular surgery, abdominal trauma, hand and wrist injuries. There were lots of thought provoking discussions on the complications and clinical scenarios of each speciality. Thank you, Mark Duxbury, Rod Chalmers and Nick Gillham The final session of the day was a panel discussion on what goes wrong and why? The Key Takeaways were:- Diagnostic delays and missed diagnoses continue to pose significant challenges. Fixed mindsets can hinder proper assessment and decision-making. Image interpretation is essential for accurate diagnosis. Timely intervention is critical for improving patient outcomes. One of the final points was how medico-legal work has enhanced the clinical practices of our speakers in the following ways:- Valuable teaching resource Learning from others' experiences Departmental policy improvements Importance of second opinions before re-operations Good governance promoting best practices Alignment with Getting It Right First Time (GIRFT) principles. These insights underscore that continuous learning and improvement are not just beneficial, but essential in improving patient safety. A special thank you to our chair, Lauren Sutherland QC for keeping everyone on time and posing thought-provoking questions that engaged both the audience and speakers. #MedicoLegal #TraumaCare #ContinuousImprovement #ClinicalExcellence #GIRFT
