Back when I served as a production supervisor, a key responsibility of mine was drafting operator line-ups for the second and third shifts, as well as weekends. My primary objective was to create a standardized format rich in detail, aiming to preempt those dreaded 3 a.m. pager calls for mundane inquiries. Equally important was empowering operators with the necessary information to navigate potential challenges during off-shifts, all while maintaining my own sanity. Rather than reacting harshly to routine errors made by off-shift operators, I adopted a proactive approach. Upon encountering such situations, I conducted thorough reviews of the issue and decision-making process. Subsequently, I worked collaboratively with the team to highlight opportunities for improvement, fostering a culture of continuous learning and development. Fast forward to today, technological advancements have revolutionized our ability to deliver work instructions electronically. Operators now have instant access to clear instructions upon logging into the system, including details on production targets, destination, end customers, and a summary of any alerts or issues from the preceding shift. Reflecting on the progress made, it's gratifying to see how far we've come. Thankfully, pagers, once an integral part of our communication system, are now relegated to the annals of history, symbolizing the evolution and improvement of our operational practices.

Film and video production can indeed be high-risk activities, requiring strict adherence to safety protocols to protect all involved. Here are the most important safety measures that a production should implement to ensure everyone's health and safety: ⛑️Comprehensive Training: Educate all crew members and cast about safety protocols, the proper use of equipment, and emergency response procedures. Regularly scheduled training sessions should be mandatory. ⛑️Thorough Risk Assessments: Before any shooting begins, conduct detailed risk assessments to identify potential hazards specific to each location and scene. Mitigation strategies should be developed and communicated to everyone on set. ⛑️Use of Professional Stunt Coordinators: Whenever stunts are involved, a professional stunt coordinator should be employed to plan and oversee all stunt activities. They ensure that stunts are performed safely and that all performers are adequately trained and prepared. ⛑️Strict Adherence to Work Hours and Breaks: Follow labor laws regarding work hours and breaks to prevent fatigue. Overworking can lead to accidents due to decreased alertness and concentration. ⛑️Proper Personal Protective Equipment (PPE): Provide appropriate PPE for the crew and cast, including helmets, gloves, or high-visibility clothing, depending on the nature of the scene being filmed. ⛑️Regular Equipment Checks: Ensure all equipment is regularly inspected and maintained. This includes cameras, lighting, electrical devices, and any special rigging equipment used on set. ⛑️Clear Communication Channels: Maintain clear and open lines of communication across all levels of production. Use walkie-talkies or other communication devices to ensure messages regarding safety are promptly delivered and received. ⛑️Emergency Preparedness: Have a clear, well-rehearsed emergency plan in place, including evacuation routes, designated meeting points, and access to first aid. Make sure all crew and cast know what to do in case of an emergency. ⛑️Insurance and Legal Compliance: Ensure that the production adheres to all state and federal safety laws and regulations. Maintaining adequate insurance coverage is crucial to address any potential injuries or accidents on set ⛑️Safety Officers on Set: Employ qualified safety officers to monitor compliance with safety protocols continuously. They should have the authority to pause production to address safety concerns. These measures, when properly implemented, can significantly reduce the risks associated with film and video production, ensuring a safer environment for all personnel involved.

We are currently assisting a film location search in the Greater Toronto Area for an international streaming service production. The search is for an industrial space that resembles a "meat processing plant". The request is to film for 3-5 days between the end of April and end of May 2024. The production will dress the space to make it appear to be a meat process plant as long as it has some existing infrastructure i.e. assembly lines with conveyor belts or moving ‘hook’ lines (i.e. dry cleaner style). We know the search is unique...but sharing this out to the commercial/industrial industry followers that may have an industrial space vacant and ready for some sort term ancillary revenue for the asset. #AncillaryRevenue #FilmLocationManagement #SpecialtyLeasing
