🚀 This weekend, I participated in the Gen:48 Short Film Competition hosted by Runway for AI-generated films. It was an intense 48 hours, but I'm proud of the final product! 🎬 What do you think? 🤔 💡 Key takeaways from this AI filmmaking journey: 1. Continuity is a major challenge, especially with characters and settings. I chose LEGO-inspired figures to maintain consistency — their appearance doesn’t change much, so they worked well for creating a recognizable main character. 2. Story is king! Like in film school, I was reminded that no matter how powerful the tech, a strong, well-structured story is what truly captivates the audience. (You be the judge of my storytelling abilities!) 3. You don’t lead AI, AI leads you. The process involves iterating over prompts, but the AI often interprets them in unexpected ways. Refining the alignment between what you imagine and what AI generates is the next big hurdle. I found myself re-prompting the same ideas up to 10 times to get close to what I envisioned. So, it’s key to embrace some level of unpredictability. 4. Easy access vs. perceived value: As AI content becomes more accessible, we will get accustomed to high-quality outputs without any effort. Real, life-action and emotion-driven filmmaking and content may start holding even more value — just as analog film feels more special in a digital age. 5. AI is a tool, not a creator. While AI can generate endless possibilities, it’s up to us as creators to infuse originality and emotion into the process. Without human creativity, AI outputs lack soul, experience, and the magic of storytelling. 🎥 Bonus insight: Content creators and brands will get much out of AI for their channels and marketing. I also see the potential for AI to revolutionize pre-visualization in filmmaking, offering a new layer of creativity for directors and writers to experiment and refine their ideas before a single frame is shot. The underlying idea of copyright law is that creators should have exclusive rights to control how their works are used and shared.   One possible solution is to establish a clear link between human effort and the final product. For example, ask creators to demonstrate that their prompts for AI video output include both the writing and directing.

Great uses of todays AI tools.

Anshul Joshi made this film for a film festival contest using AI. It took him two weeks, yes, just two weeks to go from concept to the final submission which you see below. The film is a winner of the audience choice award at the AI Film Festival 2024 for Most Entertaining Film. Take a look. It’s scary. It’s exciting. The video looks eerily off at some places and that’s because these are just the early days of this tech. I am just wondering that if this is what version 1.0 looks like, what could version 10.0 be like? AI will open up new possibilities in production (speed, ease of creation, the kinds of sets, choice of actors, languages) and democratize storytelling in way that those will limited budgets and unlimited imagination can create and tell better stories with AI created stars and sets.
