Horizon’s Emergency Departments remain extremely busy, and we need to prioritize trauma and critical care patients. Patients with non-urgent medical issues may experience long wait-times. 👉 We are encouraging the public to consider other options, such as www.eVisitNB.ca for receiving non-urgent care. Virtual care can address common illnesses, infections, prescription refills, blood work requests, sick notes and more. Not sure what your best option for care is? Visit www.SoWhyWait.ca or call 811 to learn more about your options. If you are experiencing a medical emergency, please call 911 or proceed to your local Emergency Department. Emergency, critical, and urgent cases will always be seen as quickly as possible.

#QEHPublicNotice The medical team in the Accident and Emergency Department is currently responding to a surge in the number of patients presenting for treatment with various medical complaints. At 8am today March 24, 2024, approximately 50 patients were waiting to be seen and the average wait time currently exceeds 24 hours. It is at this time that we encourage members of the public to use the Patient Advice and Liaison Service (PALS/Help Desk) at 536-4800 using regular or WhatsApp calls as your first point of contact. Our doctors will be available via the hotline from 9am to midnight during this surge to provide medical advice to help you determine if AED should be the next course of action. Currently the AED Team is working to reduce the number of patients in the department and the wait time, which has increased due to the temporary closure of the 24-hour Winston Scott Polyclinic at Jemmotts Lane, St. Michael. That facility is expected to reopen on Wednesday March 27, 2024. Life-threatening conditions, under the AED’s Triage System will continue to be seen and treated immediately. These include patients who for example, have life, limb or sight threatening complaints, gunshot wounds, heart attacks, active seizure activity or a patient who needs resuscitation. Other individuals who present to AED during the current surge will experience an extended wait for treatment. Regular updates will be provided during the surge, and we the QEH management apologise for the inconvenience, as the AED team works to reduce waiting times and offer the best possible care and treatment.

Emergency medicine is a branch of medicine that focuses on diagnosing and treating injuries and illnesses that are severe enough to need emergency care. Emergency physicians are qualified to handle a broad spectrum of medical crises, including respiratory distress, infectious diseases, cardiac arrest, and trauma. They work in emergency rooms of hospitals, where they are under constant pressure to make quick decisions that frequently save lives. Emergency medicine is a multidisciplinary field that includes trauma management, critical care, and disaster preparedness. Emergency physicians are vital to the timely and efficient treatment of patients during their most vulnerable periods. We do expect the surge may continue until Wednesday March 27th , 2024, when the 24-hour Winston Scott Polyclinic at Jemmotts Lane, St. Michael, is scheduled to reopen. A reminder, life-threatening conditions, under the AED’s Triage System will continue to be seen and treated immediately. ✅ CRASH CART TROLLEY ✅ An emergency trolley equipped with essential medications and tools necessary for life-saving interventions, particularly in cases of cardiac arrest or other medical emergencies. Among the medications stored in the crash cart are High-Risk Medications, as well as Look-Alike and Sound-Alike (LASA) Medications. To mitigate risks of errors, these medications should be clearly distinguished: 🔴 High-Risk Medications must be labeled with a red label and placed on red-colored paper. 🟡 Look-Alike Medications should be labeled with yellow, and 🔵 Sound-Alike Medications with blue. The proper labeling and segregation of these medications help to reduce the likelihood of administration errors, ensuring patient safety during critical moments. The Crash Cart serves as a pivotal component in emergency preparedness, reducing response times and aiding healthcare professionals in delivering prompt, effective care. #PatientSafety #HRMmedications #ICU #MedicationSafety #crashcart #LASA

As a company with geriatricians, physicians, and nurses passionate about taking care of older adults, we felt it was important for everyone to know what Sepsis is, who’s vulnerable, and warning signs. Here’s what you can do to safeguard from Sepsis: If you or a loved one is currently being treated for infection, tell your health care provider if you do not feel better with treatment or feel worse despite treatment.
