We’ve been pioneering organic since we started in 1991. Our practices go above and beyond USDA standards for the good of our cows and the land. Our farming family is over 500-farms strong, and they all have a unique story to tell. As Dairy Month comes to a close, we’re proud to highlight the Borbonus Family Farm. Thank you to the Borbonus family and all of our farmer partners! Happy #DairyMonth!

#FridayFeature! 📸 We recently met with Nick Green of Kingston View Farms to check out his rotational grazing operation! 🐮 In partnership with potato producer Craig McCloskey, Nick moves his herd daily to graze on Craig’s cover crops. This innovative practice benefits both beef and potato producers, as cows get food, and farmers receive manure for their fields. 🌾 #DYK By moving cattle daily, they leave half of the trampled vegetation for carbon building. For example, cattle typically only eat the seed head of things like oats or rye, and leave the remaining stock trampled. Proper management and deciding when and how often to move the fences play a crucial role in this process. To learn more about collaboration between potato and beef farmers, visit: https://lnkd.in/evjgwWY9 Stay tuned for next week’s feature! 🌱 #PEIAg

Despite what mainstream rhetoric will have you believe, the term “factory farming” does not exist in the beef industry. While beefs journey from pasture to plate is most definitely a complex process, I assure you there is one thing remains constant – FAMILIES are the people responsible for supplying you your beef.! Of the 700,000 beef ranches in the US & 91% of them are owned by families just like mine. On top of that, the average herd size in the US is 40 head of cattle. Which makes our ranch almost 20x larger than the average herd size. If you feel comfortable with the way my family raises beef - then you should feel comfortable with the way every family in the nation raises beef. I get that it’s hard to trust and support something that is unfamiliar and foreign to you. But using this type of verbiage only further perpetuates the disconnect we are seeing and adds more fear to the fire. The truth no matter how large or small an operation is - numbers do not change the way ranchers run their operations, handle their cattle or care for their land. The truth is hundreds of thousands of FAMILIES go to work to every single day to feed communities near and far. Agriculture is one of the backbones of this great Nation and FAMILIES are the backbone of it. #factsnotfear #farmersfeedtheworld

One thing I love about our local agriculture community is that we don’t see competition, we see - and live and work in - community. 🌱💚 Last night Pennsylvania Farm Link hosted a mixer at Eight Oaks Farm Distillery to showcase how farmers - experienced, growing, and aspiring - can use the resources of PA Farm Link to find a farm, find a farmer, or find support for their farm’s transition. Chad is always an exceptional host, and the Tre team fed us amazing, local eats (and admittedly some Gauker Farms beef was on the menu in miso chili meatballs and tri tip nachos - and both were delicious). You might spy my Cheese there in the middle of the photo. She was the only kid in the room last night but I don’t think anyone minded at all. Callie is the 10th generation of Gauker Farms, and part of sharing about farming is sharing family. I’m so proud and thankful that Callie gets to experience farm life and work like with me because our agriculture community recognizes that the next generation is part of this farming equation. 💚 If you know a farmer and landowner who could use some guidance in finding land, building a lease, finding a farmer to steward land, or assistance with a farm transition, PA Farm Link and Penn State Extension can help - and we’re more than happy to help! #knowyourfarmer #beginningfarmer #farmtransition #landowner #futurefarmers #growingfarmers #farm365 #wearepennstate #pafarmlink #gaukerfarms

'Make Farming secure, profitable and cooler again'. My project is currently in the community review process in Fund12 of the Catalyst Cardano Proposals - we're developing similar measures proposed by the Sustainable Food Trust where we've developed a web3 solution with traditional bricks and mortar greengrocery that supports the local economy with a secure food supply, for a profitable return for the farmers/growers with a regenerative action for innovation and investment that supports on the farm to and for the family. Issues: High barriers to entry: Local food retailers struggle to compete with larger supermarkets. Lack of support for workers: Low pay, long hours, and burnout hinder scaling efforts despite strong interest and passion. Lack of local, sustainable produce: Farm-level issues and the need for government action limit supply. Setup constraints and infrastructure limitations: The sector lacks expertise and coordination, with gaps in both physical and digital infrastructure. High costs and customer demand gap: Local food often costs more, challenging customers. Insufficient customer offerings and lack of marketing capacity also hinder demand and scaling. Solutions: Policy support: Including levelling the playing field with larger players and enable businesses to attract and retain talent. Aggregation: Streamline admin, logistics, processing, and marketing through food hubs, online platforms, and cooperatives. Investment: To build necessary infrastructure such as local food processors, and food aggregation hubs. Sector coordination: To enable streamlining and economies of scale. Customer demand generation: through marketing and a better, and more convenient customer offer. High costs and customer demand gap
🌱🍓 We’re excited to announce the launch of our new report, ‘Growing the Local Food Sector: A Snapshot of Barriers and Solutions,’ in collaboration with Sustain: The alliance for better food and farming, Food, Farming and Countryside Commission, Pasture for Life and The Landworkers' Alliance! The report highlights the key challenges in growing the local food sector, as well as a range of solutions from policy support, to aggregation and investment. 🔗 Read the report here: https://lnkd.in/ejQKPvMg #LocalFood #FutureOfFood

What do farm animals eat in winter? 1) Below is one answer. (hay baled in the summer) 2) Cover crops (planted before summer is over) 3) Eating what's left of the cash crop (sorghum, corn normally) 4) Grain Our sheep are about to start eating sorghum/milo residue. The crop was grown for Canidae. We also grew a multi-species, summer cover crop. We baled the cover crop and kept the bales on the cropland it was grown on. This keeps the nutrient on the crop land itself versus buying more synthetics. But the bales still need to be unrolled in the winter. That's farming and Kim Wells shows that reality below.
While some might look at these bales of hay and say yuck! lol here’s the deal though. These will be unrolled in the pasture with the outer layers acting as bedding. They will nibble good parts and lay on the rest. This protects the rest of the bale with no additional products needed. Just twine holding it in. Less is more in so many ways. Farming as a business is a long hard road with every aspect of the environment being a tool and a road block. Too much or too little in an industry where there is actually very little control! So I say to you all on this amazing day to consider being part of the solution! Stay tuned as we get our final details worked out! No matter the struggles I am forever grateful to be a Farmer.
