A must-listen ZOE podcast, featuring scientist and author Professor Tim Spector OBE, reveals the truth about organic food. And firms up our belief that homegrown vegetables, grown organically without toxic chemicals, are better for you and your garden. The podcast looks at the impact of pesticides, insecticides and herbicides on the food chain and our health – with some research suggesting an increased risk of cancer among people who consume non-organic foods, particularly non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma. Foodstuffs such as oats, rice and water-rich vegetables such as cucumber seem to absorb more pesticides. A large meta-analysis also showed, on average, that organic food has more minerals and 30 to 40 percent more polyphenols (micronutrients). One theory is that when insecticides, fertilisers, and chemicals are used, the plant does not need defence chemicals, so it does not produce them. Likewise, in Vietnam, the Plant Protection Department enforces safety standards, dispelling the myth that pesticides go unchecked. Meat & Dairy Misconceptions: Safety in StandardsAdding hormones to cattle accelerates growth, providing more food efficiently. The FDA insists that hormone treatments in food-producing animals pose no human risk if residues remain below established safe levels. Antibiotics, too, are FDA-approved, used judiciously to prevent and control disease, not the villain they're made out to be. GMOs: Groundlessly FearedDespite the organic trend's 'GMO-Free' labels, over 280 science and technology organizations worldwide affirm GMO safety. Independent studies, like those by Klumper and Pellegrino, demonstrate GMO crops reduce pesticide residues and yield more nutritious produce, marking 25 years of global consensus on GMO benefits. Environmental Effects: A Closer LookOrganic farming's ban on genetic manipulation ironically harms the environment more. GM crops have shown to decrease greenhouse gas emissions, akin to removing 16.7 million cars from the road, outperforming organic methods in efficiency and environmental friendliness. Health Hype: No Significant DifferenceWhen it comes to nutrition, organic foods don't offer notable benefits over their conventional counterparts. Vitamins and nutrients are virtually identical across both farming practices, with no clear health outcome differences. In essence, the organic label carries many myths needing clarification. Finally some mainstream coverage. There are 3 bits that the author omitted imo: 1) “Regular” food grown with synthetics is laced with antibiotics (like glyphosate) and chemical adjuvants (like PFAS) which not only help the chemicals stick better to the foods, but also transport them into our bodies. 2) Healthy soil is completely skewed towards good microbes vs bad (as opposed to unhealthy soils which use synthetics, and indeed breed conditions which favour pathogens 3) the best food is that which you grow yourself - in a veggie patch, container or even window box or hanging basket. Then you know what you are getting - just watch out for GMOs or seeds covered in neonics whcih you can avoid by buying organic or starting from organic scratch. A vermicompost will give you incredible composts and recycle yr food scraps too (and it doesn’t smell even a bit when done right!)

You don't need to wash organic produce. This is a common misconception. Just because produce is organic doesn't mean it's free from contaminants. Organic fruits and vegetables may not be treated with synthetic pesticides, but they can still be coated with natural pesticides and other organic matter. More importantly, they are exposed to the same risks during harvesting, transportation, and shelving as conventional produce. These include exposure to dirt, bacteria, and handling by multiple people.
