Congratulations, Erin Hurley! Great article on an important topic. "I am very grateful for the research assistant opportunities, such as the Plutonium Project and the Contesting Energy Discourses through Action Research (CEDAR) Project, that I have had the chance to participate in at St. Thomas University (CA). These have led me to develop a growing interest in nuclear and energy issues." Check out the article, linked below!
I had the honor of getting an opinion piece published in the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists earlier this month! In this article, I discuss the small modular nuclear reactors (SMRs) being proposed for New Brunswick and the many environmental and social problems that would arise from these developments. A special thank you to M V Ramana, Professor and Simons Chair in Disarmament, Global and Human Security at the UBC School of Public Policy and Global Affairs (SPPGA), and Dawn Stover, a science and environmental journalist and contributing editor at the Bulletin, for their extremely helpful guidance and feedback on my article. Kernkraftwerk Leibstadt AG (KKL) won the EPRI technology transfer award 2023 for conducting a systematic evaluation of seismically induced fire and flood (SIFF) events. The state-of-the-art EPRI SIFF guidance was adopted which is primarily intended towards probabilistic assessment, and the methodology was extended to include deterministic considerations, in a first of a kind application. Notably, this is one of the first comprehensive SIFF studies undertaken in Europe, acknowledged by an international peer review committee. Team RELSAFE is privileged to have contributed to this innovative project and we express our thanks to KKL for this opportunity.
