Glass buttons; which are made in Czech Republic are made by taking hot glass rods and pressing it with a pair of long metal pliers. These pliers already have the metal mold shape set in them. It takes quite some time to be able to learn the way to press properly and not waste glass and also press hard enough to press the shape with that hot molten glass. It is a hard job to do all day long and you will need very strong arms, usually men perform this function. After the men are finished pressing the button one at a time, they put the glass buttons into a cool down area, on the side of the oven. Once they cool down, they bring them over to the machine to trim the edges of the over flow of the glass, off the button. They then bring the button over to the next machine to grind and polish the edge. If painting was requested, the button then goes to another button hut or a home of women who will be hand painting them. If silver backing is also requested, the buttons will then go to a small hut where they will put the buttons in metal trays upside down and spray the silver metal on the back. They will then be put into a kiln to bake the finishes on. ~ Buttons have been around a very long time. they are used for closures on capes, in jewelry, put on sweaters, coats, pants, shoes, etc. It is limitless. There are many types of of ways a button can be sewn on, depending on how many holes it has or what type of shank it has. A design on a button sometimes has story behind it as to why the creator designed it. The button stories are endless..... and as many people have said thru the year: "Button, Button, Who has the Button?" Well, we do! I go directly to these button pressers and have new buttons made using old pliers and sometimes I design my own shapes to be made in to new molds. I hope you enjoy a button or two in your life.

(🎧 recommended) (Read below) Snare Saturday: Honest Abe Heavy Patina Copper 14” x 5” Snare Drum . . . As much as we talk about gear, drumheads, hardware, build, and bearing edges, there doesn’t seem to be much talk about the finish of a drum. The finish or look of a drum is the first thing we see before we ever touch or play a drum. This brief interaction will define whether or not we will explore this drum's sonic potential. Let’s take metal drums as an example here. For most of us, we like a metal shell to catch someone’s eye because of its plated and polished finish. On the contrary, some of us enjoy the look of the multicolored, aged-on metal shells like the one in this video. Neither of these options significantly changes the sonic makeup of the drum being played. Although, it does allow you to see into the heart of the person playing that drum I would love to hear your guys’ thoughts. What is your preference when it comes to the finish of a metal shell, polished and plated or raw with patina? Comment below, and let’s chat about it. I hope you guys enjoy experimenting! Have a fantastic weekend. Love you, guys!! Okay.
