Here’s a question for anyone that knows their road markings. Why was longitudinal marking 1049 varied in the 2016 release to 1049A and 1049B ? The variation means that diagram 1049 as an edge line to footways or shared routes on any highway scheme from 2016 onwards, is not compliant with the regulation. The only acceptance being for a mandatory cycle lane. That being said, I see longitudinal edge lining painted on new schemes all over for footways and shared use routes. Is there now an alternative marking or is the specification of 1049 on any new scheme a result of ignorance to the fact that the TSRGD changed? LTN 1/20 also states several times when 1049A/B can be used. None of which are to bound a footway or shared use route. I’d be interested to know why the variation came into effect.
