Semiglutide, commonly known as Ozempic, is a hot topic right now, and I had the opportunity to sit down with Associate Professor Priya Sumithran, an endocrinologist and clinical researcher in the latest podcast episode. Priya serves as the Head of the Obesity and Metabolic Medicine Group in the Department of Surgery at Monash University. It was so much more than just talking about weight loss medications, Priya shared some really valuable insight into the stigma that people face, not just for having obesity, but also how they may choose to treat it. “There's so much judgment of that nature and this perception that it's an “easy way out”, there's so much stigma associated with not just having obesity, but also treating it, there's a stigma about both but really for almost all people who struggle with their weight. There are so many reasons beyond their control that contribute to it and for most people, it has a biological basis, so a genetic basis, that makes us particularly prone to putting on weight in a certain environment…it is a pity that science has advanced and there are so many avenues of help now but there's still such a stigma against using them.” – Priya Sumithran Weight loss and obesity in MS – Is Ozempic the solution? I'm excited to announce the publication of our latest research article, "A Cross-sectional Observational Research on Assessment of Patterns of Discharge Medications in Patients with Chronic Kidney Disease Associated with Diabetes Mellitus and Hypertension," in the Journal of the Scientific Society. This study explores the discharge medication patterns in patients with CKD and comorbidities of hypertension and diabetes, providing valuable insights into the management of these conditions to minimize medication-related errors and enhance patient outcomes. 10% of visits to an obstetrician were performed via #telehealth last quarter. Visits to #mentalhealth professionals (36.8%), and infectious disease professionals (10.6%) round out the top three most common specialties. Other specialties are embracing the trend at a similar clip: 9.9% of visits to transplant doctors, 9.5% of neurology visits, 9% of gastroenterology visits, and 8.9% of endocrinology visits also occurred via telehealth. #healthcare #healthinsurance

Ms. Jones sat in her nephrologist's office, glancing over the Patient Activation Measure (PAM) survey handed to her. As she scanned the questions, she strongly disagreed with Question #4 and also showed reservations on Questions #10 & #13. Instead of merely collecting Ms. Jones' responses and moving on, her healthcare provider viewed this as an opportunity—a chance to truly understand and act on what the PAM was highlighting. The World Health Organization has long advocated for patient empowerment as a process where individuals gain significant control over health decisions. With the Kidney Care Choices model incorporating the PAM as a central quality metric, it's pivotal for nephrology practices to fully grasp its implications. This isn't just asking patients to complete a survey to satisfy a checkbox. It's about gleaning insights from these responses and translating them into actionable strategies for optimal care. Following the release of the KCC Model and inclusion of the PAM - nephrology experts responded that we need additional evidence that higher levels of patient activation are associated with clinically meaningful outcomes in kidney disease. The only way to determine the association is to actually act upon the survey results. In Ms. Jones' case, her reservations could lead to referrals to a pharmacist, thanks to her response to Question #4, and possibly a dietician for her answers to Questions #10 & #13. In essence, every PAM survey is an open door to improving patient activation and ensuring they receive comprehensive, tailored care.
