#Frustration Working in hospice care, we become familiar with the cycle of life and death, and while each passing is difficult, there is a certain solace in knowing that a well-prepared end brings peace to both the patient and their loved ones. However, recent experiences have brought a profound sense of frustration—not because of the inevitable outcome, but because of the circumstances surrounding it. Imagine a family, unprepared and unaware of the imminent end, clinging to the hope that a patient, despite advanced stage 4 cancer with metastases, might improve and assured treatment. They arrive at the hospice, eyes pleading for help, unaware that their loved one is gasping for their final breaths. The burden of conveying this reality to them, all at once, is immense. The distress felt by both the family and the healthcare team in such moments is profound. As professionals, we stayed longer, beyond our shifts, to ensure the family understood and could begin to process the shock. It was a collective effort to bridge the gap left by the lack of earlier communication. This incident underscores the critical need for interprofessional awareness and collaboration. Hospice and palliative care should never be misunderstood as simply a place to hasten death. These services exist to provide dignity, comfort, and support during the most vulnerable time in a person’s life. The cavalier attitude of some professionals towards hospice, as merely a dumping ground for those beyond curative treatment, is disheartening. Every member of the healthcare team has a responsibility to communicate clearly and compassionately, ensuring families are fully informed and prepared. This is not just about medical treatment; it’s about human connection, understanding, and respect for the journey every patient and their family must take. We continue to educate and advocate for a more empathetic and integrated approach to palliative and hospice care, where every patient’s dignity is upheld, and every family is supported through their most difficult moments. #PCawareness #integratedapproach #dignity
