We are so happy to announce our recent Core Values Award winner: Tara-Marie Fuller! This is a monthly, peer-voted award granted to Host Healthcare team members who embody our core values. This month's award focused on our core value pillar of personal accountability: we take ownership of our outcomes, admit when we are wrong, and learn from our mistakes. Tara-Marie is a Credentialing Specialist at Host Healthcare and received a glowing nomination from her peers, "Tara-Marie is amazing to work with. She communicates every day and whenever there is an update. She has been such a positive, productive, and overall excellent team member. She explains everything quickly and clearly; deadlines, asking for help, reaching out to Account Managers, and sending multiple options to make things easier. She resembles all of Host's core values."

I recently stepped off the governing Board of a 50+ year old private hospital after six years (2018-2023) chairing both the Clinical Governance Committee and in my last four years, the Board itself. Reflecting, i teased out six points for each year of service. 1. Leadership is in the moment. Challenges of the times always require that someone responds to the call to lead. Will you respond to the call to lead a compelling vision or will you rather sit it out? 2. Harness and maximize the full strengths and talents of the team. This will prevent the leader from the burden of feeling he/she alone must have all the solutions. Create a nurturing and productive environment and you will be amazed by what the team can accomplish. 3. We are simply performing roles and it is important to be appreciative of everyone’s gifts, talents and contributions to the team. We do this in the humility that our positions are an opportunity and a blessing to serve and not that the positions per se confer the greatest wisdom on us or that others in the team are unable to shine if given our roles. 4. Take responsibility for the good times as well as the challenging times. Avoid the fundamental attribution error where the good is attributable to your wisdom and efforts, but the bad is a reflection of the failings of the others including the external environment. Learn the applicable lessons, whether the outcomes are good or bad and keep things moving. 5. Opportunities always exist to continuously hone your skills and grow your knowledge. And you have a responsibility to plan your professional and personal development. You are not too old, experienced or knowledgeable to grow. 6. It is important to master the art of balancing short-term needs with longer term strategic goals. The real needs and lawful demands of team members should not simply all be sacrificed on the altar of a promise of a better future. If need be, and the present must be sacrificed for the future, then carve a stake in that future for those sacrificing today. sodzitettey@gmail.com

Thank you Mirek Skrypak for leading the NELFT NHS Foundation Trust Board Pocket QI session yesterday. Was a great way to get us all on the same page with our understanding of quality improvement across the Trust as well as considering our role as leaders in supporting quality improvement. Was good to focus on outcomes for those who use our services when it comes to Board discussions about QI, rather than being caught up in the operational details about the number of projects or people trained. A good shift for us in terms of considering quality improvement strategically and alongside other work that is happening. We talked a lot about how we give people permission to focus on quality improvement when there can be many perceived barriers such as time, resource and competing priorities. One of the things I have been thinking about since the session is the challenge for organisational wide corporate services. We are often empowered to make decisions about where we focus our improvement efforts, as well as the professional expertise and the data to support our improvements. Where we come unstuck is not having the buy in across the organisation. I've often been in organisational wide meetings where I think we have agreed priorities, or agreed what the team will not be working on, only to have this undone when someone outside of the team wants their work prioritised. There is definitely more work to do in positioning comms and other corporate services as experts in our fields, working towards the same organisational goals and being respected to make decisions about where and how we spend our time and expertise for maximum benefit. Interested to hear views from others who have successfully supported and protected their teams time to focus on improvement while managing the expectations of others outside of the team...

Associations fill the gap between what happens in school and on the job 🤝 They bring people together — competitors join the same team to improve the industry. According to Carey Goryl, CAE, CPRP, CEO of the Association for Advancing Physician and Provider Recruitment, one huge part of her role is change management. Associations have the power to change everything (even in slow-to-evolve industries like healthcare). Tune in to learn more 🎧
