He did the task well. And he totally screwed up the vision. "I was speaking to an audience of about eighty people in a downtown Toronto hotel ballroom during a leadership meeting for a financial services client. In the middle of my presentation, the service door behind me opened, and in walked a hotel employee with a tray of full water pitchers. Without a word -- or any acknowledgement that there were people in the room or a presentation taking place -- he began to replace the empty water pitchers on the tables with full ones. He banged and clanged his way through the room, walking in front of people – including me -- as he carried out his task. He was focused, and doing a good job of replacing empty water pitchers. Unfortunately, the job he was doing was in direct conflict with part of the hotel’s stated vision: to create an environment conducive to productivity and effective meetings." - From Never By Chance End result: failure of the hotel to fulfill its vision. To me, this is a leadership issue. An employee didn't understand the point of his job. Leadership fail. #leadership #vision #clarity #TheIdeaBistro

Reflecting on my journey in hospitality, I've been consistently reminded that the true essence of this industry lies far from the BIG tips, the allure of the next “new shiny thing” in town that's just a rehash of previous ideas somewhereelse, or the missteps of leaders more focused on self-promotion than authentic service. Such leaders, who relish the echo of their own voice in needless meetings or boast about personal expenditures and vacations funded on the hard work of their teams, miss the mark of true leadership in hospitality. The genuine heart of hospitality pulsates with those who give of themselves selflessly, dedicating their time and energy to truly serve others. This ethos traces back to the ancient innkeepers, who greeted every traveler with warmth and a safe haven, embodying the industry's foundational values of generosity and heartfelt connection. As we move forward, embracing new technologies and ideas in hospitality, it becomes increasingly vital to acknowledge and celebrate the individuals who live out these foundational principles daily. These are the people who, regardless of the era or the latest trends, understand that at its core, hospitality is about caring for people.
