As the 2025 budgeting season kicks off, it’s time to compare hospitality marketing spend with broader industry trends. According to Gartner's latest CMO Spend Survey, marketing budgets are averaging just 7.7% of revenue in 2024, the lowest post-pandemic. In hospitality, this gap is even wider. Most hotels spend less than 2.5% of room revenue on marketing, including sales team payroll. For comparison, Expedia spent 54% of its 2023 revenue—$6.9 billion—on sales and marketing. This underinvestment in marketing, technology, and talent means OTAs and intermediaries dominate, capturing $75 billion annually in commissions. 📉 What’s needed? A shift in hospitality’s mindset toward digital growth: • Increase marketing spend to 4-6% of room revenue • Invest in crucial tech solutions: CRM, RMS, chatbots, ORM, guest messaging, and issue resolution tools Building direct relationships with guests is key. I am not sure if I agree with this, Jordan. I might be in the minority that think this, but here goes. Recently, I have seen hotel groups opting for non-hospitality CDP options that are more feature-rich than hospitality-only CRMs. The connectivity in PMS systems is getting to a point where you can generally ingest and sync data without too much hassle. Apaleo and Channex (for example) have launched no-code integrations on Make that can be used to push and sync data into all sorts of platform like Klaviyo, HubSpot, Salesforce. The hotel-specific data types for leading CDPs are largely pretty flexible as well and allow for custom events and custom parameters to synchronised and used in segmentation / automation. There is also nothing stopping you pushing data from other data sources across the business, which you would miss out on if you were relying solely on PMS-fed data. One major issue I have is that most hotel CRMs are just one-way integrations. One can put data in, but very rarely fetch data dynamically and use it elsewhere. I am told some have CDP and 2-way integrations on the way, so hopefully my mind is changed there in future. I do agree that hotel-specific CRM do make things easier initially (and you do pay for the privilege), but I think the barrier to using other, more advanced and flexible options, is coming down all the time.
