This report for Human Rights for Kids has been over a year in the making, and I believe its findings should be a must read to anyone who want to talk about kids and the justice system. Unheard: The Epidemic of Severe Trauma Among Girls Tried as Adults details nearly universal severe trauma among women in the adult prison system who committed their offense as girls, including 92% reporting emotional abuse and 84% reporting physical and sexual abuse. If we seek to care about victims of abuse and trauma, we must turn our attention to the justice system, because that is where they end up when our existing systems fail to catch them. https://lnkd.in/eSmHxrH5

At TCRP, we envision a future where we prioritize care and support for our children over incarceration, where they are not subjected to violence, harm, and violations of their constitutional rights. Last week, the U.S. Department of Justice Civil Rights Division highlighted this issue by releasing a report that found multiple unconstitutional conditions at five Texas juvenile justice facilities. The report highlights the severe and systemic abuse that has, for far too long, gone unnoticed by everyone except those close enough to the children to know. As a survivor of institutional child sexual abuse. I agree the memorials & places of remembrance can be powerful. What is even more powerful is ensuring young people & adults feel ‘safe’ enough to report & share their stories. And when they do they are ‘heard’. The ramifications of child sexual abuse are life long, it does not go away. It does get easier & with amazing support as a white cis gay male I have had the privilege of being well supported on my healing/transformative journey. I am grateful to see these changes occur & hope for a future where survivors are fully heard. I would inform government organisations & workers survivors healing does not stop, the implications of abuse does not only impact on  one area of a persons being, it impacts on all areas of  a persons wellbeing. Not only for the survivors but their families. The key I believe is well informed & trained practitioners in all fields of practice. One of the key issues in the context of my own support & healing journey was finding support and people who could hold a space for my experiences not only as a survivor but as a person. The legal system & pathway I experienced was extremely complex & long taking not months but years for the perpetrator of my case to be convicted & jailed. As stated in many ways I was some what prepared due to my career & amazing community surrounding me but ultimately it felt like his needs (the perpetrator) were always placed before the survivors. The complexities of child sexual abuse/sexual abuse are complex with many factors for each individual. One pathway will not suit all survivors!As professionals we need to understand and ensure we do not embed service provision which is a tick box approach but a comprehensive trauma informed approach which enhances & explores all the health factors of a persons journey. The key to my own healing was I was fortunate to meet an amazing practitioner who did not see me as a symptom or as a diagnosis. She listened! Allowed me to make clear choices, but to deeply heal by connecting with parts of self which had been repressed & never heard. My inner-child was once scared, timid & at times not sure this world was safe. Now. He is my super hero. 

On August 15, 2024, we mark 78 years of independence, but the primary question remains: Are we truly celebrating justice? At Amma Hospital, we believe in the fight for justice for all. Interesting article about domestic violence and how abusers and their victims can be wealthy affable and well connected in society. I took a domestic violence law class in law school taught by the amazing Professor Emily Sack. Fortunately the trial raised awareness on this topic.
