A week ago, I attended the yearly conference organized by PublicSpaces, a coalition fighting for the internet to become a more public (or less commercial) space. It gave me mixed feelings. On the one hand, a defeating despair about our increasing dependence on non-European big tech and the EU becoming more and more of a ‘digital colony’ with only a few really worrying about it. On the other hand, the conference gave me hope and optimism. The stories of our relatively small community are becoming more mainstream. What we probably need now is a digital crisis for more awareness and money for alternative tech. At the conference, we presented one of those alternatives called PubHubs (see: https://lnkd.in/eUua5Caa ). It is a Slack-like public social media tool being built by Radboud University in collaboration with public libraries, broadcasters and patient federations.
