Congrats Minnesota! Surgeons use various devices to cut and coagulate tissue, which results in the release of a gaseous byproduct (surgical smoke) into the air. Surgical smoke poses adverse effects on the health of those working in the OR. Conditions include headaches, nausea, eye irritation, respiratory tract issues, and carcinomas. Controlling surgical smoke, however, is a challenge. In those states without smoke safety laws, the surgeons usually decide whether to use a smoke evacuation device, and they may not believe the exposure is great enough to warrant evacuation. Smoke plume particles have a diameter less than or equal to 0.1mm, therefore, surgical masks do not filter particles with a diameter less than 5 mm. Thus, smoke plume particles are inhaled by personnel in the OR. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health recommends using smoke evacuators to control surgical smoke. Using general room ventilation can reduce exposure to surgical smoke, it just does not eliminate airborne particles. Placing a local exhaust ventilation device near the source of smoke generation can reduce the number of aerosolized particles. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health also recommends placing the nozzle inlet within two inches of the surgical site. If a facility purchases a product selection for smoke evacuation technology, policies and procedures for surgical smoke evacuation should be created. Is your state 1 of the 18th that is surgical smoke-free? I am your legal nurse consultant and expert witness to the OR. Please email me at kvaccalnc@gmail.com for inquiries. Let's connect and make those medical records make sense!
The Land of 10,000 Lakes is going surgical smoke-free! Congratulations to Minnesota, the 18th state to enact surgical smoke evacuation legislation. The new law goes into effect January 1, 2025.
