Have you visited the Mahila Baug Jhalra at Jodhpur yet? TOURISTS FLOCK TO JODHPUR TO see the astonishing Mehrangarh Fort, a 15th-century bastion that looms over the city like a watchful parent. It’s enormous, perched on a hunk of rock that’s always in view. But just a stone’s throw away, another of Jodhpur’s monuments has a much lower profile, quite literally: The 18th-century Mahila Baag Jhalra, a subterranean stepwell that’s so unobtrusive it’s almost impossible to see, even when you’re standing a few feet away. The lovely, multi-layered and multi-hued structure appears in no guidebook, on any tour, or in hardly anyone’s consciousness. But it wasn’t always that way. Stepwells were sophisticated water-harvesting structures built throughout India starting around 600 CE.  There were thousands of them, each providing continual, year-round access to water that fluctuated dramatically between the dry and the rainy seasons. Long flights of steps could reach the ground water at its lowest, and as water rose during monsoons, the steps would submerge, sometimes entirely. This nifty, efficient system continued for over a millennium, gradually waning by the 19th century. Passersby are oblivious, and it’s nearly unimaginable that Mahila Baag Jhalra was originally embedded in an elegant garden (baag). The stepwell is allegedly named for Mayla, a beautiful and wealthy concubine who is said to have commissioned it. Through the centuries, Mayla evolved into Mahila, which means “lady” in Hindi, and compared to the brutal-looking fort, this diminutive, inconspicuous structure seems especially dainty. It’s a multi-hued layer cake of stone, built from the pink sandstone seen in so many of Rajasthan’s monuments. There are small pavilions at each corner that were shady retreats in scorching summers when cooling off by the water’s edge must have been appealing. J: Though that sounds tasty, I doubt it beat our dal baati churma and the wholesome sweets and snacks from LMB & Rawat’s. And our festivals? They're like living in a fairytale. S: Ah, your fairytales won’t keep pace with the sky-high fun that kite flying during Uttarayan offers. And your scorching heat and seething cold? Must be tough. J: Not if you see the good things. And whatever remains, the beautiful sunsets at Nahargarh Fort make up for it. S: Meanwhile, you are really lucky with water management. I’ve been struggling with floods in recent years. They turn parts of my city into Venice! J: Yet, at least you have Tapi River. Ever had a riverside picnic in the evening, gazing at the stars there? Meanwhile, I have to be satisfied with the barrage of Bollywood stars who keep landing down! S: Haha! Good point. J: By the way, like you have diamonds and textiles, we have got gems and jewellery too. And that too with a royal touch. And our crafts? They're in a league of their own. S: Hey that’s awesome! But, please don’t think I am just about those things. I’m also a major manufacturing powerhouse with massive steel, power, cement, speciality chemicals and even defence, with L&T building crazy big howitzer guns! J: Woah, woah, super-pumped! That’s good! However, all that boom must be causing great traffic for your roads, right? S: Ah no doubt! But, getting around in Jaipur’s jam-packed roads is like navigating a maze. How do you deal with that? J: Eh! We thrive in the hustle. Though, to be frank, we’ve probably just gotten used to it. S: Haha! Well, we haven’t, and are therefore building a fab metro rail corridor. J: Ah! Best wishes for that one. Hope it doesn’t end up like mine, which has not even been used by a per cent of my population. S: Haha! That’s true. We do have our share of flaws, but the good things just help make up for it. J: Like your vibrant and massive saree market! S: And your night bazaars, a carinal of lights and colours!
