Ireland faces a significant housing challenge. Economist Ronan Lyons estimates that the country must build between 56,000 and 74,000 new homes annually until 2050 to meet demand. With a new government now in place, today we launch our five clear recommendations for change. 📢📑 A decent and affordable home is the foundation for life, work and wellbeing. But millions of people are living in unsafe, insecure, unaffordable homes – or in some cases without a home at all.  The UK’s housing system is in crisis, but we believe this can and must change. The recently published report by the Housing Commission has brought to light the profound challenges facing Ireland’s housing sector. The Housing Commission rightly emphasises the need to fully account for the economic and social costs associated with unmet housing needs. These costs of inaction disproportionately affect younger adults, lower-income cohorts, and those seeking housing near Ireland’s main cities. Social Justice Ireland welcomes this report by the Housing Commission and the recognition of these challenges. We have long advocated for similar recommendations, highlighting the urgent need for robust policy reforms to address the deep-seated issues that have distressed Ireland's housing market for years. Housing in the UK is awash with short-term policies and unintended consequences. Housing in the UK is in crisis and it will take decades to improve. Change is possible. We can fix it. What about buyers of second hand homes…? “We want to deliver a dramatic increase in both social and affordable housing stock and in private home ownership. The Housing Commission said that a radical reset of housing policy was required to end the housing emergency created by successive governments” All fine and dandy if you can afford a fancy new home, whilst it might be in the detail to come, where’s the support for say tenants buying out their tenancy? Whilst they pay the same tax as first time buyers are buyers of second hand homes being forgotten? As the same Housing Commission brought out isn’t the second hand market just as valid a route to affordable home ownership to get our kids on the property ladder? Note to Eoin Ó Broin TD-like the rest your thinking is overly focussed on new homes. A wider approach to include greater support for buyers of second hand homes merits some thought and inclusion

England's affordable housing crisis is sometimes framed as a predominantly London and the South East-centric issue, but this overlooks the acute challenges faced by other regions. Between 2000 – 2023, the overall stock of social housing in Northern regions fell by 14%. This compares with a 2% increase in the rest of England.
