“Efforts such as art installations and design innovation are not just about events but are becoming part of the fabric of the community. This continues to push the future of convention centers as flexible, multi-functional spaces that foster engagement and appeal to both industry professionals and tourists alike.” - John Page, Regional Vice President, Convention Centers - ASM Global
Across the globe, convention centers are embracing year-round public use. From sheltering evacuees from natural disasters to showcasing local art to hosting holiday gatherings, event venues are stepping up to enrich, advocate for and serve their communities. Organisers of the iconic Bristol International Balloon Fiesta have managed to reduce their annual funding gap to £15,000 – down from the £100,000 deficit following the 2023 event. Despite attracting hundreds of thousands of visitors and bringing an estimated £14.7 million into the economy during the event week - making it the city’s most valuable annual outdoor event - the organisation that runs it is still making a financial loss. https://lnkd.in/eEm7cK7s

First and foremost, I’m a strong supporter of Wellington’s convention & exhibition centre -Tākina. I was part of the council back in 2018 when we committed to building the convention centre, which was funded approximately 70% from business rates and the rest from residential. It’s one of those rare projects that was delivered on time and within budget. Unlike for Auckland and Christchurch, the government never came through with its contribution (small at $25 million). The building itself is not the issue — the challenge lies in how the convention centre and its exhibitions are being run. Late last year, the council made changes to the conventions part of the business. Initially, Te Papa had oversight, but it became clear within six months that the setup was not working. The management has now been handed over to WellingtonNZ, and I’m hopeful this will lead to a better-integrated offering. However, the exhibitions side of the operation has always been controlled by the WCC. Unfortunately, the current council’s approach to transparency leaves much to be desired. We need to see the numbers and gain a better understanding of what led to low attendance compared to budgeted targets. From my own experience attending a couple of exhibitions, I was disappointed by the lack of an integrated experience and, frankly, the poor value for money. I’m not surprised by the low turnout. But we all need clearer insight into what went wrong and how the issues can be addressed moving forward. https://lnkd.in/gqqj8YSW

Seattle Event Professionals and those that schedule industry events at Seattle hotels! Share this with our network! You know how I am always complaining about events pulling from the same audience all happening at the same time? There is a solution! Attached is the Seattle Events Calendar, managed by Jana Heinrichs, CERP Make sure whoever schedules events checks the calendar first (it’s a featured post in Seattle Event Professionals, located on Facebook), to ensure there are no conflicts. Once you do set a date, make a comment on the calendar and the admin will update, so others that check the calendar don't book their events on that day, especially if it's an event that is pulling the same attendees. #eventslife #eventprofs #pnwevents
