The majority’s decision is out of step with public sentiment. Our recent research shows that 7 out 10 respondents reject jailing, ticketing and fining people who have nowhere else to go. This decision will only make homelessness worse. With so many people struggling to get or stay housed we have to seize this moment and build a coordinated, bold movement for real, compassionate and effective solutions.

Education, Advocacy and a Person-Centered approach in home care are the keys to excellent case management, naturally resulting in improved health outcomes.
The key thing coming from the Liberal Democrats Autumn Conference is the desperate need for collective efforts in tackling the housing crisis. That it's only through partnership working across public and private sectors with crucial financial support and backing from the government that we can really achieve the housing targets and reduce the increasing experiences of homelessness 🏡

This is such an important issue for everyone. We need all families to be secure, warm and fed. Because it's morally right, and because we need everyone to reach their full potential if our society is to thrive.
Increasing the supply of affordable housing is crucial. However, our research has highlighted the lack of studies assessing the impact of other interventions to improve quality of life in people who are homeless or with insecure housing. We need to identify quick wins to make life more tolerable for people who are waiting for permanent accommodation, and then have systems in place to act on the evidence.

FACT: The cost of rehousing is lower than the cost of remaining homeless.
A recent study from Brussels Studies, demonstrates how rehousing people experiencing homelessness is not only the ethical solution but also more cost effective.

86 Strategic Street Interventions in 4 hours isn’t even close to my record (137).
The fact that I’m still doing these 25 years after first showing this country how to stop producing American Homelessness - before women like this lost soul were even born - means that the mindset and listening skills of people in charge is likely contributing to the continuation of this tragic human crisis.
Hopefully there will emerge a new generation of leaders who listen as well as the unhoused I engage, or there might not be any parks, sidewalks or business centers left in the foreseeable future.
Homelessness is a problem to solve, not an industry to grow.

A few U.S. cities (NYC, SF, Boston) now have the most expensive average apartment monthly rental rates on the planet. To address homelessness, workforce recruitment, and a host of other issues including long-term economic viability, increased housing density is going to have to be a part of the equation.

Policy change can help, yes... but not with a huge price tag.
When we say "the government needs to do more," tax payers hear, "the government wants more of my money to give away to irresponsible people." This message creates tension between the policy makers, the organizations, tax payers, and those who need help, and nothing gets accomplished.
Most of the outreach efforts for the homeless through the government organizations are through satellite offices. Workers are rude and indifferent to those they were hired to help. Assistance applications are done by computer, phone, or walk-ins. Applicants must remain in contact with the agencies, and provide proofs of every detail of their lives. An unhoused person doesn't have access to most of their necessary documentation, transportation, technology, etc... and gets turned away for services.
My point is, these services are not reaching the right target population, and people don't like paying for them. A new strategy is needed. One that incorporates the private business sector.

To truly solve homelessness we need transformative policy change and real system change. Funding more of what we already have will make an impact for sure— and we must fight for all of those resources and policy reforms now. But we cannot stop there or believe that simply doing more of what we’re doing will result in true housing justice.
This learning brief from Community Solutions examines public perceptions of people experiencing homelessness and dispels inaccurate assumptions and stereotypes embedded within them. Check out this important, educational piece at https://lnkd.in/ewhS79mR.
