Tomorrow, America will celebrate its 248th birthday. 🇺🇸 Many of us are thinking about what our future is going to look like after last week's controversial events – a critical Presidential #debate, #SCOTUS repealing a landmark decision, the criminalization of homelessness, and more. It’s important to remember that only by embracing our #history with honesty and holding optimism for the future can we create the America of our dreams. For more wise words from our CEO Nisha Anand on the meaning of democracy as we edge closer to the 250th anniversary of this country, head here: https://lnkd.in/gFqEBtRU

Check-out our latest op-ed on opportunity hoarding and white fortressing. Brian Smedley and I are developping a body of work on these topics and are developping more evidence on how these mechanisms promote segregation today:
We often understand structural racism when looking backwards - redlining, school segregation, etc. But it's important to understand how decisions being made today will impact future generations and further exacerbate poverty and inequality. Check out this important article on white fortressing from my brilliant colleagues Brian Smedley and Luisa Godinez Puig, that lays out how localities are using incorporation to concentrate resources among the wealthy and leaving their lower income neighbors further marginalized.

As reparations begin to pick up more traction and momentum in the state of California, I implore anyone and everyone involved, or simply reading and discussing this topic to pause and think about more than the media attention it brings. Before jumping onto one side of the argument or another (for or against) take the time to consider what is being left out. A group which is consistently left out of conversations regarding some form or retroactive rebalancing. Native Americans. Do not forget that this is a group of people which had a government funded genocide attempt against for more than 100 years. A group of people who the government entered into land agreements with, only to disregard and adjust those agreements multiple times, with each iteration being some small fraction of the one prior. If you support the current form and discussion of reparations then you must support and enact reparations for the Native Americans. Gavin Newsom where are your bills for Native American reparations? #nativeamericans #nativeamerican #reparations #equality #hypocrisy #nativeamericanheritage #financialequality

What if your father was killed, tortured, by the leaders of your country? How do you possibly move on? What could ever 'make up' for this happening? Today on Transforming Transitional Justice - the final episode of this series - we'll be diving into the many challenges still facing victims and survivors of atrocity as well as how the international community can help them better navigate these obstacles. In particular, we will explore the many ways that reparations can - when made available - provide concrete assistance to survivors. We’ll also examine how international entities can better support community-led transitional justice efforts. Produced for the International Coalition of Sites of Conscience.
