Dallas and Collin counties have effectively ended Veteran homelessness, which means our system has the capacity to move Veterans back into permanent housing within less than 90 days. How did our community met this milestone? 🤝 Increased collaboration and coordination between the VA and the homeless response system. 💵 Aligning public and private investments to expand the rehousing system. 🎯 Transformed our system with a laser focus on strategies that prioritize getting individuals, including all Veterans, into housing and connected to wraparound support. We have more work to do! Every Veteran deserves a safe and stable place to call home. Learn more about this milestone here: https://lnkd.in/g3M_K_Ff #endhomelessness #Veteranhomelessness

#veterans #homeless Veteran homelessness is a pressing issue that demands our immediate attention and action. The idea that veterans should "stay where they are at" because of a perceived lack of resources or societal indifference is a damaging and misleading narrative. These are men and women who have served our country, often at great personal cost, and they deserve better than to be left behind. It's crucial to debunk the myth that there's no place for these veterans to go or that they are somehow beyond help. The truth is, with the right support systems in place—affordable housing, mental health services, and job training—veterans can and do rebuild their lives. Homelessness among veterans is not a reflection of their capabilities or worth but a failure of the systems meant to support them. We must challenge this narrative and advocate for more robust programs that provide the necessary resources for our veterans to thrive. They have given so much to our country; it's time we give back by ensuring they have a safe place to call home. The status quo is unacceptable, and it's on all of us to push for the changes that will end veteran homelessness for good.

In December the US Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) published its Annual Homeless Assessment Report. 📝 Here’s what it said about Veterans… “In 2023, 35,574 veterans were experiencing homelessness-22 of every 10,000 veterans in the United States. The number of veterans experiencing homelessness increased by seven percent (2,445 more veterans) between 2022 and 2023. The increase included a 14 percent rise in the number of unsheltered veterans (1,943 more veterans) and a three percent increase in veterans experiencing sheltered homelessness (502 more veterans). Despite increases in experiences of veteran homelessness between 2022 and 2023, the number of veterans experiencing homelessness is 52 percent lower than it was in 2009, the baseline year for reporting veterans experiencing homelessness in the AHAR.” Link in comments to full report. 🇺🇸 You can be a part of efforts to improve the quality of life for our heroes this year! 2️⃣0️⃣2️⃣4️⃣ Our goal is pretty clear… to ensure no veteran fights for shelter, struggles with unemployment, lacks access to opportunities and assistance during justice involved circumstances, or is otherwise neglected while trying to improve him/ her self. 💪 Join us in making a difference. Help us help them rewrite their stories. 🤝 #Warhorse #SupportOurHeroes #EndVeteranHomelessness #MakeADifference 🇺🇸

VA announces goal to house 41,000+ Veterans experiencing homelessness in 2024 If you are a Veteran who is experiencing homelessness or at risk for homelessness, call the National Call Center for Homeless Veterans at 877-4AID-VET (877-424-3838). Visit the VA Homeless Programs website to learn about housing initiatives and other programs for Veterans exiting homelessness. Specifically, in fiscal year 2024, VA will: Place at least 41,000 Veterans experiencing homelessness into permanent housing. Ensure that at least 95% of the Veterans housed in FY 2024 do not return to homelessness during the year. Engage with at least 40,000 unsheltered Veterans to help them obtain housing and other wraparound services. Thanks in part to VA’s efforts, the number of Veterans experiencing homelessness has fallen by nearly 5% since early 2020 and by more than 52% since 2010. VA also announced specific goals for combating Veteran homelessness in the Greater Los Angeles area. During 2023, VA provided 1,790 permanent housing placements to formerly homeless Veterans in LA, the most of any city in America, and exceeded their local goal by over 19%. In FY 2024, VA will build on that progress by: Permanently housing at least 1,605 Veterans experiencing homelessness. Engaging with at least 2,184 unsheltered Veterans to help them obtain housing and other wraparound services. For more information about VA’s comprehensive efforts to end Veteran homelessness, visit VA.gov/homeless.

This should be done in every town across the country.
Homeless veterans in Tennessee now have shelter as they find employment, health care and financial stability. Four tiny single-unit homes have been built on property owned by and adjacent from American Legion Post 207 in Spencer, Tenn.

For folks closely involved in or tracking efforts on #homelessness it's not news that the HUD-VASH program, a collaboration between U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development and U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, has been the most successful homelessness program by far. Reducing the number of homeless veterans by half in the last 15 years is no small feat. However, the effort stands out in #homelessnesspolicy precisely because it is not primarily constrained by a lack of money. While there is nearly one #voucher for every homeless veteran, among other Americans the ratio is about one for every seven homeless people. https://lnkd.in/dbhgHCYP What lessons could be learned from helping #veterans avoid homelessness? Are the issues facing those at risk of becoming homeless political or financial? Is it promising or concerning that there is no engagement from #healthcare entities in this work?
