DID HOU KNOW? The Astros needed help with attendance in the early 70s, so “Foamer Night” was created. The premise was simple. If the Astros hit a home run while a designated scoreboard light was on fans would win free beer until the end of the inning. The Astros did not hit many homers in those years, so the promotion switched to an Astros pitcher striking out an opposing batter. The most notable “Foamer” is most likely in 1976 when Larry Dierker recorded a strikeout with the Foamer light on. Most of the crowd immediately strolled to the beer stands, which resulted in many of them missing the final outs of what turned out to be the fifth no-hitter in Astros history.
