I wanted to share this excellent editorial written by Michelle Ryland, SE, RA in the current Structures issue from NCSEA. https://lnkd.in/gQwzBV6s Michelle addresses how things have changed in our industry and the challenges of getting young engineers engaged in our industry associations. I can relate similar stories (I won't bore you with them at this time but ask me sometime and I will gladly share!) of how I became engaged as a young engineer. The short version is I wanted to network with some of the great and experienced engineers in the Chicago area and #SEAOI gave me that opportunity. Today, there are a lot of mentoring opportunities out there in addition to getting involved with your local SEA. But it takes a willingness to get involved. This is my call to you to get involved. I highly recommend to all the young engineers out there (and the older ones too!) to make an effort to get involved in anything, anywhere. Join a committee in your local SEA, join a task group for a code organization that interests you, volunteer at an #Engineering-focused outreach event (https://lnkd.in/gPQ58aEV), organize a softball or volleyball game with your peers, do ANYTHING that helps you engage with your peers OUTSIDE of work. This is so important not only for the health of these organizations and our profession, but it is important for your personal development.

Reflecting on my journey, I want to share a personal failure story that shaped my path. During senior high, facing harsh criticism during our thesis defense was deeply humiliating. Graduating without a clear direction, failing an exam, and feeling lost were tough blows. However, embracing resilience, I found a new path at EARIST in Civil Engineering, despite lacking a STEM background. Overcoming insecurities, I led our group to excel in our thesis, earning top honors in our class. From setbacks to success, I've learned that failure isn't the end but a stepping stone to unforeseen opportunities. This is the "Z" reversal in the Darjeeling Hill Railway at a place called Rangtong. Many of you would have enjoyed this ride on this train. But I don't know how many of you have noticed this difficult turn. In 1880, the engineer who was laying the track, could not find enough space for the track to climb up. It was impossible to take the track forward along the hills. He was stuck. His wife gave him an idea💡 Their Conversation: Engineer's wife: Darling, why are you so worried with this piece of paper? Engineer: I am not able to find a solution for this Engineering problem Wife: What problem? tell me Engineer: After constructing upto this stretch, not able to proceed forward. Wife: So what? Engineer: No place to go forward, very steep terrain. Wife: If you are not able to proceed forward, don't worry. Go backward Engineer: what? Wife: Yes, Go reverse! Engineer got the solution and finalised the design. He had mentioned this in his diary.
