Last week, LeDuc Montgomery LLC obtained a Temporary Restraining Order against the Washington Department of Natural Resources, halting the logging of 68 acres of "almost old growth" Legacy Forests in the Action Item timber sale in Western Washington. This legal action was taken on behalf of the Legacy Forest Defense Coalition. DNR is obligated by its Habitat Conservation Plan, Policy for Sustainable Forest, and implementing Procedures to protect structurally complex forests. But DNR has been clear cutting these forests instead, violating its own policies. In some DNR planning units, the remaining Legacy Forest constitutes less than 1% of the managed lands. Despite this scarcity, the Department continues to approve more sales of legacy forests for clearcutting, further endangering these vital and extremely rare natural habitats. Our dedicated team is committed to supporting the Coalition in the crucial mission of safeguarding the last remaining Legacy Forests in Washington. 🌲 For more information on the Coalition's initiatives and our legal efforts, visit: https://lnkd.in/g_nbM3_W #forestdefense #environmentallaw

Land stewardship spotlight on #riparianareas! 🔦 As the Hill Country's population grows and becomes increasingly urbanized, our pristine rivers, lakes, and streams face degrading water quality as a result of increasingly polluted stormwater runoff. Riparian areas—the interface between land and a river, lake or stream—play a key role in keeping surface waters clean and flowing. Native plants found in healthy riparian areas not only work to filter pollution from stormwater runoff, but also increase aquifer recharge, provide a habitat for wildlife, stabilize stream banks and help dissipate the energy of floodwaters. https://lnkd.in/e5iF6c3X #txwater #texaswater #riparianzone #nativeplants #texasrivers #txrivers

On February 8, 2023, Assemblymember Gail Pellerin of the 28th Assembly District introduced Assembly Bill 2103 (formerly 566), which will allow California State Parks to more effectively work with conservation organizations to protect priority lands and grow Big Basin, Butano, and Año Nuevo State Parks —a region with incredible biodiversity and natural resources recently devastated by the 2020 CZU Fire. 🌲 🌲 🌲 On May 16, 2024, Assembly Bill 2103 passed the California State Assembly appropriations committee. This is another step closer to rebuilding parks like Big Basin Redwoods State Park and protecting our recovering habitats, but AB 2103 needs to keep moving through the Assembly to become a reality. ▶️ ▶️ ▶️ Will you urge state leadership to support AB 2103 to rebuild State Parks?: https://bit.ly/3V89Xyc

There’s still time to speak up for sage-grouse! https://lnkd.in/gNC7Qnd8 The Bureau of Land Management is accepting public comments through June 13 on its draft Greater Sage-Grouse Environmental Impact Statement and associated Resource Management Plan Amendments. When completed, these plans will guide management decisions for approximately 67 million acres of sage-grouse habitat on public lands overseen by the BLM across 10 Western states. Collaborative conservation efforts by state and federal managers, private landowners, and NGOs must continue if we are to reverse the trend of significant habitat loss across the sagebrush ecosystem, which supports other iconic Western species, including mule deer and pronghorn. The journey of restoration is interesting, it is defined by persistence and determination.
We’re proud to host Amboseli's first indigenous tree nursery in partnership with the USDA Forest Service. The success of this initiative has led to its expansion, and our Conservation Education Officer, Kelvin Otwori, offers a glimpse into its impact. #TreeNursery #ConservationPartnership

A win for community organising and the arid lands - Buffel grass has been declared a weed across the Northern Territory! Buffel grass is a major threat to biodiversity, transforming landscapes and altering fire regimes. This landmark decision is the result of decades of relentless advocacy and community organizing. A victory is not just for the community but for the desert plants and animals that desperately needed this outcome. Now, to get on with stoping the spread! To understand the issue and possible solutions check out the Arid Lands Environment Centre’s position paper, Firestorm - Understanding the risks and seizing the opportunities to better manage buffel grass across the Territory. - https://lnkd.in/g_3XmeNw
