'Counties across Washington, of all sizes, are on the same kind of financial precipice. Many county officials blame the handcuffs that the Legislature has put on property taxes, their most crucial revenue source. No matter how fast property values increase, state law only lets most local governments increase their property tax revenue from existing properties by 1% without voter-approved ballot measures. Washington’s cap on property taxes is among the strictest in the country.' 'If your property increases in value faster than your neighbors’, you pay for a bigger slice. But the only way the whole pie can grow faster than 1% a year is through voter-approved levies or new construction, which isn’t limited by the cap.' Property Owner Cartel or Ponzi scheme or both?

AFFORDABLE HOUSING INSIGHT ALERT: The House of Representatives voted yesterday to pass the Tax Relief for American Families and Workers Act. This legislation includes key measures to boost the low-income housing tax credit (LIHTC) program, specifically, restoration of a 12.5% allocation increase, and reducing the 50% bond financing threshold to 30%. These changes will allow for the financing of thousands of affordable homes throughout the United States. The legislation will now move to the Senate for approval. As one of the largest LIHTC lenders in the country, we applaud this effort as a step towards providing much needed affordable housing across the country. Lancaster County government has gone ELEVEN years without raising your taxes. Property taxes are a problem in PA. Especially in these days of high inflation. Many seniors struggle with property taxes that seem to go up every year. I think the legislature should do away with them and/or implement alternatives. But in the meantime, Lancaster County government does what we can at our level to control the burden and keep senior citizens in their homes. Lancaster County government has gone ELEVEN years without raising your taxes. This is especially hard to do during the recent high inflation years. At the same time, we have saved money, paid down debt, taken care of our infrastructure, provided for public safety, and led the nation in farmland preservation. We try to set a shining example of what efficient, effective, people centered government can do.
