🎖️ 📚 #PostdoctoralFellowship - In an exciting development for the field of neuroscience and decision-making research, Dr Bolton Chau (Associate Professor) and Dr Jing-Jun Wong (Postdoctoral Fellow) of Department of Rehabilitation Sciences have been selected to receive the distinguished Research Grants Council (RGC) Postdoctoral Fellowship. 🧠 🎯 💡The RGC Postdoctoral Fellowship has been awarded to support Dr Wong to work with Dr Chau on an innovative research project titled "Exploring a grid-like code for representing decisions in the prefrontal cortex". This project aims to tackle one of the most intriguing questions in neuroscience today: how does the brain integrate qualitatively different attributes to make decisions? The team's research will utilise cutting-edge brain imaging techniques to uncover the processes occurring in the prefrontal cortex, a critical area of the brain involved in decision-making and cognitive control. ‘Did I lock the door properly’ Questions like such won’t pop in your head anymore because there’s an exciting breakthrough in neuroscience!     Scientists from Wake Forest University School of Medicine and USC have achieved a remarkable feat: using a neural prosthetic device to recall specific memories for the first time. This groundbreaking research, published in Frontiers in Computational Neuroscience, builds on their previous success in implementing a prosthetic system that leverages a person's own memory patterns to enhance memory encoding and recall.  Some points worth noticing    - Successful trials have been conducted with human participants.  - The study involved 14 adults diagnosed with epilepsy and these individuals were part of a diagnostic brain-mapping procedure.  - Surgically implanted electrodes helped locate their seizures.  - Targeted electrical stimulation occurred in the hippocampus region.    This research opens new avenues for understanding memory and could lead to innovative treatments for memory-related disorders. Computational models for a better overall understanding of the brain Satu Palva, Director of the Neuroscience Center, intends to increase its translational research and introduce computational models. She describes neuroscience as a field with a great deal of innovation potential. Brain diseases are the most expensive public health problem in Finland. Their high costs increase the urgent need to better understand brain function. “For now, we understand a few elements of the complex brain system at different levels, but we don’t yet know how these elements work together across levels, for example, how genes affect human brain function,” says Director Satu Palva of the Neuroscience Center under the University of Helsinki’s Helsinki Institute of Life Science (HiLIFE). “The number of innovations is expected to grow significantly in neuroscience. We also have a number of researchers with extensive research experience who are at a career stage in which innovations come naturally,” she states.
