DNV has granted approval in principle to Kongsberg Maritime to allow the role of Chief Engineer to be transferred from a ship to a shore-based control centre. Rather than working onboard a vessel, duties can be carried out from a desk-based workstation, allowing for monitoring and control of systems including the power management system, ballast water system and deck machinery. Jarle Coll Blomhoff, Head of Digital Ship Systems at DNV, said: “Remote machinery support is a first natural step on the path to autonomy as the engineering functions onboard a vessel are in many ways already automated.” Full approval of ‘Chief-to-Shore’ functionality is expected to be given the green light later this year.
