Unanimous approval for NXQ Manchester! Manchester City Council unanimously approved the plans for our heritage-led Tech Hub on 23 January 2025. Located in a prominent position within #Manchester’s vibrant Northern Quarter neighbourhood, we’ve designed a heritage-led workplace scheme for client Soller. Through extensive consultation with the City Council, key stakeholder groups and the public, the design for “NXQ” carefully retains and restores key heritage assets on the site while respecting its historic neighbours, particularly the Grade II listed Daily Express Building. Partner Dav Bansal commented: “Our adaptive re-use of an existing block will deliver a new #TechHub which pays homage to the exceptional Art Deco “Streamline Moderne” Express Building, alongside the careful and measured retention and restoration of historic buildings and facades along Lever Street.” Continue reading: https://lnkd.in/eafq_672 AKT II | Turner & Townsend | AtkinsRéalis | Atelier Ten | AshtonHale | Planit | #WorkplaceArchitecture #ManchesterArchitecture #ArtDeco #NorthernQuarter #Howells

'KCAP's Nelson Housing in Amsterdam Published in Architectenweb' #KCAP is proud to share that at the end of November, in #Amsterdam Southeast, construction officially started on one of our new projects, named #Nelson. Set to include about 400 affordable new homes with lively plinths; Nelson is a synergy between city and the adjacent green heart of Southeast. At Anton de Komplein and the Nelson Mandelapark, it is part of the larger 'Nelson' urban plan, also by KCAP. This ensemble of five buildings, strung around an existing sports centre, will reshape this urban space, and thereby 'complete' the enclosure around the square, and create a front to the park. This building of the project, which began construction in November, was designed in collabroation with Atelier van Berlo, for developer Synchroon. The building was recently published in Architectenweb; the most widely read digital Dutch publication covering architecture within the Benelux region. Reading the #Guardian’s article on the Old Street roundabout’s recent transformation (https://lnkd.in/dKhG5sWs), I am stunned by how much time has passed — it’s been almost 20 years since I worked with #TonkinLiu on this scheme. The client was TfL, London Borough of Islington, and Hackney, consulting with the GLA. Tonkin Liu's team conceived and proposed the idea of the peninsularisation of the Old Street roundabout at the design stage of the 2004 “Any Old Street” competition run by the Architectural Foundation. Tonkin Liu, who won the competition, delivered the design for the Promenade of Light in 2006, which proved an immediate success, winning several prestigious awards. We were then commissioned to develop it to RIBA Stage 2 in 2008, with a full team including structural engineers at #AKTII, services engineers from #Mecserve, and #Gleeds cost consultants. The area subsequently went through rapid regeneration and, with the influx of digi-tech, became dubbed the Silicon Roundabout. Our proposed peninsularisation, closing off the least-used arm and introducing a centralised tube entrance as a public hub, featured a layered public realm both above and below ground. Extensive crowd and transport modelling proved the peninsularisation viable and aided the design of widened footways for improved pedestrian safety. We integrated the vent shafts and advertising into a cohesive above-ground public green space, bringing natural lighting and cooling for the tube station. Based on our study of all the urban approaches, as well as the lease and revenue of the billboard, we retained the advertising space by integrating it into the new tube entrance, held up by a structural tree (see image). This ‘Tree in a Well’ concept was a key element of the design, symbolising a new light well rising from the station below, with a canopy acting as a visual marker for the broader urban area. Now that I look back at it, it was an aspirational, integrated, engineered scheme that aligned well with the area's evolution and the vision of the partners. We would have loved to have taken our scheme forward to completion and can see a kinship between our team’s proposal and what has been completed today in 2024.

Brian and I could be considered boomerangs with this move... So excited for this next chapter. For almost 17 years, Studio C has been working incredibly hard for and with our clients to help them achieve their own successes and that of those whom they continually serve so tirelessly. We're now so happy to re-join MG2 as it will help us to serve more people more rigorously, with the same intent and passion as we've always had on our projects. This is supposed to be harder than this. Typically, when an acquisition like this takes place, there are so many hurdles to overcome. How do we build trust within the group? How do we keep serving our clients the way that they need? How do we merge our ways of doing EVERYTHING? How do we do all of this while simultaneously ELEVATING our service in all areas? As many of you know, both Brian and I are MG2 alum. The foundations of what we've been doing all these 17 years is largely based on what we learned at the MG2 back then. While much of the technology and infrastructure in the firm may be different for us, "why" we do things and "what" we're attempting to achieve are very similar. We speak that same language on everything, which frankly is an incredible time saver. This is supposed to be harder than this but we're already focused on elevating everything that we do. Such an exciting time.

Thank you NLA for the Retro fit summit, and to shedkm Civic Engineers HUB RESIDENTIAL LIMITED The Crown Estate Gensler Buro Four JLL Common Projects for the talks and case studies. Must admit retrofit as a new type of project description is glossing over that most of us have been doing this for years as cut and carve or refurbishment but if it gives focus to retaining as many existing buildings as possible then I’m with it. The case studies were impressive amd the effort clients and teams will go to, to reduce, reuse and recycle. Good to see so much of Londons existing stock being refurbished. We should not only focus on the cut and carve and the structure issues but also on the simple workspace refurbishment and getting more clarity on the supply chain circular economy and clear certification of accreditation of new products especially M&E where the majority of the cost is. Most simple refurbishments throw away the old finishes and services and most of us I feel would push for recycled products from the circular economy if we had a database or some form of accreditation to refer to. Anyone agree? I liked the concept of architects redesigning the past, that struck a chord.
Today, the #RetrofitSummit at Livery Hall, Guildhall explored how adaptive reuse and circular principles are injecting new life into old buildings, sponsored by Civic Engineers and shedkm! We heard exciting presentations on the best practice projects, strategies and programmes happening across London and the UK, and explored how we can achieve shared knowledge across the industry, the importance of engaging communities in #retrofit projects, and the need to integrate retrofit into wider stories of affordability, sustainability and placemaking. Thank you to our speakers Valeria Segovia, Gensler, Hazel Rounding, shedkm, Clare Harrison, The Crown Estate, Tom Stoneham, HUB, Ruth Oates, Buro Four, Mari Samuelsen, Fletcher Priest Architects, Steve Sanham, Common Projects, Festus Moffat, John Robertson Architects, Andrew Davidson, Studio PDP, Dr. Austin Entonu, MBE, MBA, ACCA, PRINCE2 and CFA, Greater London Authority, Kirsty Draper, JLL, Gareth Atkinson, Civic Engineers, and Oli Pye, Montagu Evans.
