Ligue 1's Spotlight Dims Post-Mbappé Kylian Mbappé's departure from Ligue 1 has marked a significant shift for French football. As the league's standout star, Mbappé attracted global attention and boosted commercial appeal. His exit has created a noticeable void, with Ligue 1 struggling to maintain its prominence in the face of declining viewership and sponsorships. While the league continues to feature talented players, none have yet matched Mbappé's global impact. Clubs like Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) are working to fill this gap through emerging talent and strategic signings. Despite these challenges, Ligue 1 remains competitive and vibrant. The league now faces the task of redefining its narrative and fostering new stars to reclaim its global spotlight. #footballminute #minutedigest #ligueun #mbappe

This is one of the best sports business podcasts I’ve listened to. This episode has everything and lifts the lid on the inner workings of a football club, something which is often a mystery to many fans. Jonathan Turner demonstrates the value of transferable skills - from a background in Tech to becoming a board member of a top Premier League football club. He discusses the challenges of balancing on-pitch performance, running a sustainable business, putting the fans first, and delivering value to shareholders. The episode also explores the similarities between customer acquisition and growing a global fan base, and how football clubs can operate more like technology businesses. #SportsBusiness #Football #Tech #Leadership #PremierLeague

Can a "regional" club become a continental force? The answer is yes! And Fortaleza Esporte Clube is a prime example of that. From being in the Brazilian third division just 6 years ago, to now being one of the strongest teams in South America. Not many outside of Brazil have heard of the club, but just in the last few years they have won 3 Copas do Nordeste, have reached a continental final (Sulamericana), and have one of the strongest home fields of anyone in South America. Just ask Boca Juniors, who were defeated 4-2 in their last trip to the Castelão. So how did this happen? In my opinion, due to the following factors: - A strong and capable leader, Marcelo Paz, who was able to navigate the complex political side that plagues any significant club in Brazil, and implement a clear vision of responsible management and continuity. - Hiring the right coach and keeping him on the job despite rough stretches. Juan Pablo Vojvoda elevated Fortaleza to where they are now, and he was only able to do so because of the trust management had in him. Despite some periods of bad results, they never even considered sacking him. - A fanbase who embraced the process of rebuilding from scratch. Even for a regional team like Fortaleza, being in the third national division was rock bottom. Being able to reconstruct step by step to reach Serie A again and then excel in it required a lot of patience from fans. Now they are able to enjoy the success of their team. - Playing in the Arena Castelão, a World Cup stadium and one that allows the fans to create an incredible atmosphere and helps the team secure many victories at home. And best of all is that the club is still able to maintain a democratic price range, far from what is practiced by the bigger clubs. - Most importantly, not getting caught up in their success. Fortaleza’s team has been improving consistently over the years, but they never went for the big, market splash signing. Instead, they focus on role players from the top Brazilian sides and standouts from other South American leagues to build a homogenous roster that has no stars but plenty of cohesion and quality players. Fortaleza is a clear example that a clear vision, good leadership, a great stadium and continuity can be key drivers for the growth of a club. They should be an example for all!

The Ballon d'Or, once regarded as the pinnacle of individual achievement in football, has sadly lost its luster and credibility in recent years. What was once a prestigious accolade celebrating the finest talents in the sport now seems to be more of a popularity contest than a true reflection of a player's skill and contributions on the pitch. The recent selections have raised eyebrows and sparked debates, leading many to question the integrity of the voting process. Instead of honoring players based on their on-field performances, it appears that factors such as marketability and media presence have taken precedence. This shift undermines the very spirit of football, which is rooted in fair competition and respect for the game's heritage. Moreover, the Ballon d'Or has become a platform that trivializes the essence of football, reducing it to mere spectacle rather than celebrating the hard work and dedication of athletes. As a result, the award no longer holds the same significance it once did, alienating fans and players alike. In an age where the game is evolving, we must ask ourselves: can we still consider the Ballon d'Or a credible award, or has it become a mere shadow of its former self, mocking the rich history and values of football? www.the-fha.com #fifa #football
