This is really interesting. Future jobs in Tech seem to be falling out of favor with students, but this is likely cyclical. Tech isn't hiring like they used to, so interest will move to other sectors. Government seems to be a hot draw right now as does healthcare and pharma. This is normal and healthy and will reverse once there is a true shortage of tech talent. Tech will ratchet up pay to draw talent in and VCs will give more money to startups until the cycle repeats. https://lnkd.in/gZAApxhZ

There's been much discourse in the tech world about "founder mode", but think there's even more to be said in biotech! We've seen an explosion of biotech startups run by founder-scientists. And since biotech is hard, there's a lot of pressure to hire more experienced leaders for various parts of the discovery and development process. Sometimes this works well -- it's great to learn from previous mistakes and avoid them. But, sometimes that experience runs counter to the novel science and processes being put in place at the startup. And conventional wisdom can only take us so far (otherwise why wouldn't we be discovering more drugs?) Don't take it from me, take it from the best biotech book of all-time: The Billion-Dollar Molecule.

While building my startup, I have seen students with a GPA of less than 8 build a strong research profile and get into top US universities. I have seen students who did not get into IIT, study hard in local colleges and end up getting jobs at Apple, Tesla and Microsoft. At IIT Madras, I have seen non-IIT students beating IITians at tech competitions. I have seen students who were mocked and bullied at school lead hugely successful startups. I have seen slow performing students whose parents had given up on them start successful Youtube channels and earn for a living. Societal tags, grades, personality traits matter upto a point. Some students go beyond all of this and just get what they want. Irrespective of their grades, which college they went, which entrance exam they cracked, what their personality traits. Don't let societal tags get in the way of your potential.

Innovation Authority Invests $9.6 Million To Support Tech Jobs in Negev and Galilee The Israel Innovation Authority רשות החדשנות Authority will invest NIS 35 million ($9.6 million) to help tech companies expand their operations in regions that are touched by the war. The funding could be streamed to support tech companies in opening new branches, hiring local talent, and fostering economic growth in the Negev and Galilee. Tech companies will be offered financial grants for practical training for inexperienced employees and funding for experienced employees who will mentor new hires through on-the-job training. “The program is designed to reduce the risk for high-tech companies considering following the path of many others and opening operations outside their main headquarters,” said Israel Innovation Authority CEO Dror Bin. The Israeli tech sector accounts for around 25% of the country’s total income tax revenue and constitutes more than 10% of the workforce. Tech companies hire people based on their talent, not based on the region they are from. I set up CloudSEK in Bangalore because of the diverse talent we have in this city. The new bill mandating reservations for locals in the private sector in Karnataka is the most unconstitutional and idiotic decision I have seen. Companies will face significant challenges in finding the best talent, leading to a potential decline in innovation and competitiveness. This move will deter global and national firms from investing in Karnataka, adversely affecting the overall economic growth and employment opportunities in the region. Implementing this policy is like forcing the Indian cricket team to select players based on their state of origin rather than their cricketing skills. Startups like ours receive no government support or subsidies. Yet, the government's desire to become involved in private companies' operations is intrusive and counterproductive. This kind of intervention can hinder operational flexibility, stifle growth, and ultimately discourage entrepreneurship. This policy risks undermining meritocracy and forcing businesses to comply with regulations that do not align with their goals or best interests. Update: Reservations only exist in other states if a private company has received subsidies from the government and not otherwise.
