In 2019, when Cindy Southwell found a bump in her anus, her doctor summed it up to a hemorrhoid until she insisted on a rectal exam. The diagnosis: HPV-16+ anal cancer. When I interviewed Cindy, she bravely opened up about a cancer that many don't want to talk about. HPVANDME hopes that Cindy's story will be watched and shared so more people learn about early symptoms and what to expect from treatment. In 2024, new anal cancer cases topped 10K in the US alone, with about 2,190 deaths, according to the American Cancer Society. The HPV vaccine helps prevent six types of HPV cancers, including anal cancer. Why is self-collection for HPV / cervical cancer screening important? Because it has the potential to help eliminate cervical cancer in our lifetimes. “If everyone was getting screened and was happy with [Pap smears,] we wouldn’t need innovation,” said Jeff Andrews, vice president of global medical affairs for diagnostic solutions at BD, in an interview with Bloomberg. “But not everyone is.” HPV self-collection can be helpful in reaching people who might otherwise go without any type of testing. In the US, the incidence rate of cervical cancer is 22% higher in Black women than White women, according to the American Cancer Society. #HealthEquity #CervicalCancerScreening #BDOnclarity #BDemployee https://bit.ly/41uTcAJ

It’s about time! The FDA has just given approval to allow women to self-collect vaginal samples for human papillomavirus (HPV) testing in a health care setting. HPV is the cause of virtually all cervical cancer, and HPV testing is the preferred screening method by the American Cancer Society. Self-collection can improve cervical cancer screening access, especially in unscreened and under-screened populations. With vaginal self-collection as an option for cervical cancer screening, women are more inclined to participate in such care, allowing health care providers an alternative option to identify a high-risk HPV infection in more convenient care settings. #cervicalcancer #womenshealth #publichealth https://lnkd.in/d6Xs3FvY
