Dear hiring teams, When defining requirements for #job openings, please consider looking at crosscutting skills and software packages related to the position or profession. Specific requirements such as mastery of your in-house software are exaggerated. It's unrealistic to expect new candidates to have excellent mastery of your in-house packages. If there is an internal candidate who already meets the requirements, it would be preferable to consider them rather than putting other candidates through the stress of applying unnecessarily.

When a developer asks you for a raise, it is already too late. If you don’t give them what they asked for - they’ll probably leave soon. If you do - you won’t get any credit, they’ll just feel as if they finally got what they deserved. You get some bonus points if 𝘆𝗼𝘂 initiate the salary increase, not waiting for your employees to ask. I know that it's probably not up to you to make those decisions. You might not even know how much your people are making. But it’s up to you to fight for your employees. Instead of hiring 4 underpaid engineers, maybe 3 well-paid ones is a better option?

Specializing in Digital Transformation, Product Development, IT Consulting and Client Services. I’m a Tech Evangelist with a ‘dad-abase’ of Dad Jokes. I’m a Solution Provider, a Problem Solver.
A few things to remember if impacted by a recent layoff. * Figure out what kind of separation this is. There are some important differences between being furloughed, laid off or permanently terminated and it could mean the difference between having healthcare coverage or not. * Write down your accomplishments and what you want to do next. * Get your layoff in writing from HR/Human Resources. * Collect or check on your final paycheck. * Ask about severance. I’ll teach you to how to negotiate for a better package, including being compensated for any unused vacation days. * File for unemployment. * Figure out your health insurance coverage. You can negotiate with HR to extend your benefits longer. I’ll show you how. * Ask your former manager for a reference and/or feedback, including writing a testimonial on LinkedIn. I’ll teach you how to ask for that. * Dust off or polish up your resume and I’ll show you how to do that by putting key words to help with that SEO optimization. * Nurture your professional contacts and let people know you're looking for your next role. * Connect with experienced recruiters like me to explore new roles during these challenging and difficult times: LinkedIn: https://lnkd.in/ehQVjTa We will cover these and other topics in detail on Thursday's call. Please join my Google group too: https://lnkd.in/gjTxaZGk Please join me every Thursday at 5pm CST to talk about the current job market, behavioral interviewing, S.T.A.R.I. methodology of answering questions and how to get into the Big Tech companies. Ever noticed that the salary for a "Senior" role in most fields stays in a similar range whether you have 7 years of experience or 17 years of experience? Say you're applying for a Sr. Software Engineer position- a talented candidate with 6 years of experience is likely getting similar pay as a candidate with 20 years of experience. Most corporate positions have a salary band that dictates this. That's because companies don't pay for "years of experience" they pay for skills and abilities that allow you to do the job effectively. A Software Architect, however, usually makes at least 20-50% more than the Senior Dev. Is it because they have more years of experience? No... it's because they have mastered an additional skillset in design and architecture. This isn't a knock on finding a role you like and specializing in it- that's great- but if you're wondering why you've seem to hit a salary/rate ceiling, consider that from a business perspective, an employer is going to pay however much the market dictates they must pay to get somebody to fulfill the needs of the position. Your ability and willingness to learn new things, take on new responsibilities, and generally be curious in your career is what will allow you to increase your income and desirability in the job market. This is what people mean when they say 10 years of the same year of experience vs. 10 years of experience. #JobMarket #CareerAdvice #ITRecruiting
